Michael Irvin to Emmitt Smith: Watch your tone

Michael Irvin has done his fair share of criticizing the Cowboys during his second career as a radio and TV personality. However, the Playmaker doesn't like what he's heard this week from his old pal Emmitt Smith.

"It's not just what you say. It's a lot of the times - most all of the time - how you say it," Irvin said on a video produced by ESPN 103.3. "Tiki Barber is the example that I harken back to when it comes to Emmitt. I said, 'Now, listen, you think they welcome Tiki over in New York, over at Giants Stadium? They don't even welcome him.' He went to NBC and he made all of those comments about Eli not being a leader, and then Eli leads them right to the Super Bowl!

"It makes it look like bitterness or something. Emmitt has no reason to be bitter - all-time leading rusher, great career, made good money - no reason to be bitter at all. So what he said may have some truth to it, but how you say it will ring in people's ears."

The Emmitt-Tiki comparison is an interesting one. But there's one big difference: Emmitt has three Super Bowl rings, Tiki zero (and the Giants won right after he retired and commenced ripping his former teammates).

I know I could be way off-based hear but maybe Emmitt is mad he was the only triplet not to end his career with the Cowboys. I mean Aikman and Irvin were hurt and the injuries pretty much ended their careers but they didn't have to put on another teams uniform. I seriously doubt that's it but I wonder what is his driving force behind the prediction at least.

Emmitt did retire as a Cowboy though.

At what point did Irvin tell Emmit to "watch his tone"? I must have missed it.

He did retire as a Cowboys but was forced to leave at one time and was not wanted. I seriously doubt I'm right but some people hold on to little stuff like that.

It's times like these when I hate not being able to watch videos here at work. I'm willing to guess that this may be another one of those times when a so-called journalist states something which didn't actually happen. Perhaps someone can confirm that suspicion?

Irvin didn't say watch your tone per se. But he did say Emmitt needs to watch how he says things. Irvin said "It's not what you say but how you say it".

Emmitt was a great player who played with lots of heart, but his IQ competes with his shoe size.

Emmitt was singing the praises of the Cowboys for the past 2 seasons this year his remarks have been very critical which one is right and which is wrong? My own believe is Emmitt is wrong about this year’s team but I respect his opinion does not mean I have to agree with it. I have always though highly of Smith and still do today.

Right on the money Mike.

Rome made the point yesterday that if Troy had said those things it wouldn't generate near the outrage.

Well, that is because Troy would have said it much differently than Emmitt did. He'd have said it in a manner that challenged but didn't necessarily disrespect.

Thats is exactly how I saw his criticism of Roy Williams. And then, when Roy put in the offseason work, Troy made sure to credit him for that.

They both seem drunk.

It's like they're leaning back and forth on bar stools.

What a lot of people fail to realize about Emmitt Smith and his departure from the Cowboys is that Jerry Jones was willing to keep Emmitt under a re-structured contract. That re-structured deal was for MORE MONEY than he was offered to play for the Cardinals.

Emmitt got comfortable in his final years in Dallas. Darren Woodson, himself, jumped Emmitt's *** for his non-chalant approach and his habit of choosing to play and set up dominoes tournaments rather than study game film.

The fact of the matter is, he didn't want to deal with Parcells because he knew that the whole "All-time leading rusher" bit wasn't going to be enough any more. He knew he would have to prove himself rather than rest on his laurels. He opted to play for LESS MONEY and be welcomed as an all time great in the desert toilet bowl franchise rather than compete and beat out (of all people) Troy Hambrick for his job.

Emmitt can be bitter all he wants. In reality, he wrote his own ticket out of town.

I hear ya. Your right about Emmitt the last two years. I forgot about that. Let me stop with my conspiracy theories. I like Emmitt also I just wonder what makes him think we are going to be THAT bad?

What makes some fans here say the same things Emmitt has said? Disappointment I would think. Way I see it right now this team has it's critics and somewhat justified even though I think some has been overly harsh but the only way to silence a critic is to go out and produce.

How can Michael Irvin tell another grown man to watch how he say things? Is there something I'm missing?
