As he served an early Thanksgiving meal to a number of people at The Salvation Army's homeless shelter in Dallas, Mike Hamlin kept answering questions as if he was Ken Hamlin.

You can excuse those unfamiliar with Mike Hamlin's work. He has not played in a game since the preseason because of a busted wrist. Able to play for the last month, Mike Hamlin has been inactive for the last four games.

That figures to change this week now that Ken Hamlin is likely out 2-4 weeks with a high ankle sprain.

"I'm very anxious," Mike Hamlin said. "I just want to contribute to the team any way I can. I think that's going to be special teams right away."

The Cowboys took Mike Hamlin in the fifth round of last April's draft. He made an immediate impression in training camp with his ability to make acrobatic interceptions but then he broke his wrist against San Francisco in the preseason, curtailing his progress. He has to wear a cast to protect the wrist in games but he says he's healthy.

He said the hardest part has been having to watch the games for the first time since redshirting at Clemson. He started a school-record 43 games and his 14 interceptions are good for third in school history.

"I've been struggling a little bit with that," Mike Hamlin said, "but a lot of my teammates have been talking to me and telling me to stay up and telling me the time is coming. They know it's rough when you're used to playing all the time to not playing."

If he shows anything, Ken Hamlin may be sitting for a long time. Which may not be a bad thing.

Mike Hamlin displayed a real nose for the football at Clemson, so it'd be nice to get him on the field in the nickel or dime at some point.

Wade Phillips mentioned yesterday that H2 has worked primarily at strong safety, but he is listed as a free safety.

I will say that he isn't the most athletically gifted player, but what he lacks in physicality, he more than makes up with smarts and understanding of the game, which is why he is always in position to make plays on the ball. He will open some eyes in a good way.

The switch to SS was Campo's brilliant idea. He was raving in the offseason about Mike and mentioned that even though he did not have much experience playing man 2 man, the Cowboys were going to try him out at SS first. :banghead:

The lack of eye popping measurables is why we landed Mike Hamlin in the 5th.

But like you said, he makes up for it by knowing where to be and just being around the football.

I hope he's not afraid to tackle.

He isn't.

But he also isn't a robot who never misses stops.

And he will be playing with a cast, which might prove problematic.

Right now, I doubt we'll see him do anything more than specials.

I've been looking forward to seeing him on the field since we selected him. I think this kid will make some big plays for us for a long time. :starspin

Mike Hamlin is a player, I hope they let him start.

I hope not. He's likely not as ready as Ball and Watkins. I'll be pleased to be wrong though.

Ball's a really underrated player. I'm excited to see how he performs given this opportunity.
