Mike Shanahan has been hired to lead Washington back to where Commanders fans feel they belong _ the top of the NFC East.

"Well, I think everybody knows the NFC East, what type of football teams we have,'' Shanahan said. "You've got to be at the top of your game. You can't have any weaknesses.

"It will be a challenge for us to get this organization back to where it's been. We understand how competitive the NFC East is and how well these teams have been playing.

"That's our goal, to get us back to where we've been.''

Commanders' Shanahan: We're keeping Campbell

February, 26, 2010 Feb 2612:09PM ET

By Matt Mosley

INDIANAPOLIS -- Commanders coach Mike Shanahan told reporters Friday that he expects quarterback Jason Campbell to return in 2010. He said Campbell will be tendered an offer next week, although he declined to reveal what that tender might be. The Commanders are expected to offer Campbell the highest tender, which would be roughly $3.2 million and would require first- and third-round compensation from another team.

Shanahan said he had "admiration" for Campbell based on the adversity he faced during the 2009 season, but he didn't want to add anything too specific about the 2010 season. He simply said that Campbell will "be here" for the upcoming season. I wouldn't expect Campbell to rush into Commanders Park and sign that tender in the near future. If the Commanders don't offer Campbell a contract extension, they're basically already treating him like a backup quarterback.

Shanahan said the Commanders will hold a minicamp before the draft in April. At this point, it would not surprise me if Campbell was absent from that minicamp. He has always put the team first, but at some point you have to look out for No. 1 -- or No. 17 in this case.

In other news, Shanahan didn't want to talk about the status of running back Clinton Portis.

"Let's not talk about Clinton," said Shanahan. "Let's talk about the whole team."

I'll be back with a Commanders column later this afternoon, but right now I'm preparing to visit with Giants coach Tom Coughlin. Since he's the most punctual head coach in league history, I better head over there pretty quickly.

Hey, Mike. The Commanders aren't known as NFC East powerhouses. Haven't been for quite some time now.

Shanny will draft a QB to groom IMO.

Hope Skins draft Sam Bradford. If they select either DT Gerald McCoy of Ndamakung Suh, they just might have the best pair (Haynesworth)of DT's in the division if not the league. No one can run up the middle against them.:banghead:

I see them drafting a LT

If I were Shannahan I'd draft the BPA and work on a five year plan to be competitive. The DTs are better than any OT.

Yes yes, welcome to the NFC East Shanny.

No more Chiefs and Raiders weeks to catch up on missed Oprah episodes.

FTW! How does not showing up for his team's mini camp benefit Campbell? I love to ask Mosely what he could be thinking or if he actually knows something.
If this is just speculation than his a bigger moron than I thought.
