Miles Austin pulling a Tony Romo?

In 2006, the Cowboys were 3-3, scuffling along after a home loss to the New York Giants and Bill Parcells decided to make the switch from Drew Bledsoe to Tony Romo.

The Cowboys won five of Romo's first six starts - and should have been 6-0 if not for a Terrell Owens' drop and wacky ending that led to a game-winning field goal at Washington - and ended up making the playoffs.

Romo brought an energy to that team.

Fast forward to 2009 and the Cowboys are scuffling along at 2-2 coming off a loss to Denver and Austin starts for the first time because of Roy Williams' bruised ribs. He gains a team-record 250 yards and scores twice to beat Kansas City and last week he picks up 171 yards and scores twice in beating Atlanta.

Any similarity there with out-of-nowhere guys playing so well and energizing the team?

"I can see that," tight end Jason Witten said. "With Miles, I don't know that anybody saw that coming. I think more than anything it's his approach and same with Tony, just the smile on his face and having a lot of energy. And Miles is the same way, literally just trying to do his job and help the team win."

Felix Jones ready to return kicks

With Allen Rossum out 2-4 weeks with a hamstring injury, Felix Jones will be the Cowboys' main kick returner but coach Wade Phillips said Wednesday they will look at some other possible returners.

Jones wants the job. He is averaging 23 yards per return on eight tries this season.

"I guess it's my time to step up," Jones said. "Hopefully we don't have to do it too many times but I'm ready when my time's called."

But is it wise to expose Jones to the bigger hits on kick returns when he's shown he's susceptible to injury in his two seasons?

"Hey, ain't no way around that," Jones said. "This is a physical game. You can get hurt walking a straight line. It's just playing football. There's no way around not getting hurt."

Jones said he will continue to wear the brace on his knee but he came out of Sunday's game vs. Atlanta feeling fine.

"The knee brace really helped me out a lot," Jones said. "Every day it's getting better to the point where I don't need it anymore but I'll guess I'll be using it until I feel confident in what's going on with my knee."

Untimely injuries have limited Felix Jones, but he's not shying away from unforced contact either. He's volunteering for extra duty (even though it probably has something also to do with contract incentives). You've gotta love it when a special player steps up wanting to do special things on the field on special teams.

I have no issue with Felix returning kicks, he is a football player playing the game of football and doing what he needs to do to help this team win games. I just don't believe in babying a player out of fear of injury when injuries can happen at any time. If someone else can do the job as effective then great put them in there if not then Jones is very dangerous back there

part of the consideration in exposing Felix to the big hits on kickoffs should be the health of our other two RBs,,, if we are already down 1 RB (or if he's only 75%) then Felix should not be returning kicks IMO...

That's why we have DeCamillis. Let him get on the players to make sure they get their blocks. If a player receives a big hit on special teams, it is because someone missed their assignment.

If Felix is returning kicks, why is Rossum still on the roster?

If its so dangerous for him to return kicks that you have to sign a KR, its probably dangerous enough that you would having someone else do it if said returner got hurt.

Because they feel a healthy Rossum can do a very good job back there. He is hurt but the games do not stop that is why they are putting Felix back there. Special teams are not an afterthought it is a big portion of the game. Heck I would think Dallas fans would know that by now give how special teams has hurt us over the last few years.

Addition by subtraction.

You take away(from Felix) a few kickoff returns for MAJOR involvement in the how many?? offensive series per game.

He is already known to be fragile. He cant have gunners "gunning" for him on KR's. He needs to be more elusive when running too. Run out of bounds BEFORE you get hit sometimes... its ok....

Let him return. If he's gonna get hurt, he's gonna get hurt. It's football. He's no less likely to get hurt as RB.

He should touch the ball as much as possible--and KO is one of his specialties.

Felix has not had injuries problems in the past, sometime freak things happen but I don't think Felix is some delicate player made of glass.
