The loss of Kyle Kosier for maybe the first month of the season hurts badly. I do have some confidence in Joe Berger to hold it down until Kosier gets back.

But the loss of Isaiah Stanback interests me as well. As of today, right now, today. The Cowboys have three proven wide receivers on the squad in Terrell Owens, Patrick Crayton and Sam Hurd.

Miles Austin is out at least two-to-three more weeks. Stanback isn't proven, yet had the inside track for the No. 5 wide receiver spot.

But with Austin and Stanback out, here are the Cowboys' choices for No. 4 and No. 5 wide receiver: Danny Amendola, Mike Jefferson, Mark Bradford, Daniel Polk and Todd Lowber.

Feel good about the wideout position now?

Also, the team is missing its two kick returners. Austin was very good last year and Stanback has shown the ability to do it. With both gone, do you rely on Orlando Scandrick to do it? Alonzo Coleman? Felix Jones? Wade Phillips ruled Jones out last week.

Should the team trade or sign a veteran wide receiver? Joe Horn is out there, but Jerry Jones said no on that.

What about trading for Anquan Boldin of Arizona?
What do the Cowboys give up? Marcus Spears? He's played great this pre-season. You might as well keep him.
Bobby Carpenter? He's also played pretty well this year and with Kevin Burnett out you need Carpenter at inside linebacker.

Lots of questions that need answers the next couple of days.

Stanback's injury worries me some. He may have a problem with keeping the shoulder in. Once that starts happening it sometimes doesn't stop without surgery. And the surgery for it doesn't work very well either. So I hope he just has isolated incidences of shoulders popping out. That happens but again if more than once you start thinking of shoulder instability.

that sucks

how long is Stanback out?

That's a detail we're not going to let get in the way of a decent panic attack. We're missing our 5th WR for an indeterminate period of time, for godsakes.

To be determined.

The shoulder may respond to rehab and not need surgery allowing Isaiah Stanback to play or he may go under the knife again on the same shoulder as last year and be lost for the season.

We are going to have to sign a WR. The numbers just don't add up we are unproven and short at the position. Someone will be signed.

I'm thinking we'll stay put and probably put Scandrick as the main kickoff returner and keep Amendola on as the 6th WR (which isn't that uncommon) because he can do returns. We'll probably wait for Austin to come back and then perhaps make some more moves, be it cutting Amendola or not.

Kosier Out Roughly 6 Weeks; Stanback Rehabbing
Posted by rphillips at 8/24/2008 3:31 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

The Cowboys received MRI results on starting left guard Kyle Kosier and second-year receiver Isaiah Stanback, who were injured in Friday's preseason win over Houston.

Kosier has a sprained foot and hairline fracture that could keep him out at least six weeks, Cowboys associate trainer Britt Brown said. Kosier will remain in a walking boot for two weeks, after which he'll be re-evaluated.

Backup Joe Berger is Kosier's likely replacement at left guard. Claimed off waivers from the Dolphins in 2006, he was active for three games last season. Cory Procter also is capable of playing guard or center.

Stanback suffered another subluxation in which the shoulder slid out of the socket and back in on its own during the opening kickoff return of the third quarter. Brown said Stanback is rehabbing and looking at his options, but he will need surgery at some point.

Stanback had a similar shoulder injury during his rookie year and needed off-season surgery.

The Cowboys now have two injured receivers who are expected to make the 53-man roster; Miles Austin will miss another 3-5 weeks with a sprained MCL. Rookie free agent Danny Amendola and first-year receiver Mike Jefferson now appear to have better odds of making the roster.

well norm said the team has interest in mike furrey. We will see if they go after a guy like that this week.

AUstin is now a 3-5 week guy instead of a 2-4 week guy? That is another bummer.

A little late Cal. The sky fell during the Denver game.

It seems to me we're in the same position at WR as we were at the begining of camp. Austin still isn't proven and Stanback is still in grade school.

Adam Jones to return punts. The Koiser loss hurts as has been pointed out. Berger better be in his back yard smashing into something.

I have some of the worst shoulders you will ever see. Subluxed my shoulder during games in high school. Somehow, I never missed a game and played through it.

I needed surgury but never got it. Through strengthening the muscles around the rotator cuff, it enabled me to be able to play while wearing a restrivtive brace(s) that prevented me from putting my hands over my head. Sucked when I missed a two point conversion in the endzone one time when the ball was thrown just above my head and I went to catch it, only to be restricted and have it go right through the "Y" i had created with my arms... :D

I think he should be fine...Portis played with it a couple of years ago too.

not good

but one positive is that the Stanback and Austin injuries might force Dallas to make a trade for a veteran WR, which they needed to do anyway imo.

I dont know why they would hold on to their first round draft pick when they are so close to making a run, and they would probably use that draft pick for a WR anyway. They could make a trade for a solid veteran WR if they wanted to.

Why in the blue hell would your coach put you in as a receiver? He did know about the braces, right?

Now that is the kind of guy we need... An underrated player who wouldn't cost a fortune but is very productive.

I don't know why they'd get rid of him, though. Did Norm say anything about if this was realistic, or just a pipe dream?

Bad news.

I had a buddy in college who played tight end, and his shoulder would occasionally pop out. While very painful, he would pop it back in by slamming his shoulder into a wall. He did it in a game one time and slammed his shoulder into the cement wall of the bleachers to reset it, then went back into the game. He was an animal.

Sounds like Stanback's shoulder went back in by itself. That kind of displacement would appear to be worse, as he can't rely on it. But, there is a brace he can wear to help prevent the situation.

The only reason this ia a bit of a big deal is cause we are already without our 4th WR for a while. So now Our 5th WR, who was going to be our 4th for a few weeks, is gone. To me, this is a reason for concern. Not Panic but concern.
