More on Chris Canty to New York

One of the overlooked parts of free agency is how a player performs against the team that signs him. That certainly has something to do with Chris Canty joining the New York Giants.

In eight regular season games against the Giants, Canty had 30 tackles, three sacks and six quarterback pressures. He had three tackles, a sack and a pressure in the playoff loss in 2007

The Giants, I believe, plan to use him as a tackle in their 4-3 scheme and have one of the best fronts going. They have Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, who missed last year with a knee injury, at defensive end with Mathias Kiwanuka as their third pass rusher. I've always liked Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield at tackle and Jay Alford is a decent backup.

Now they've signed Canty and Rocky Bernard in free agency, so I assume one of those three - or two - will be gone.

Add the signing of linebacker Michael Boley, and the Giants defense looks pretty good going forward.

They lost some of the DL depth from the Super Bowl team (Strahan retired, Osi injured). So they went out and reacquired depth.

And added a good player in Boley to their LB group.

Giants defense looks good.

We should be in line for a pretty good comp pick in 2010.

I'd hope a 3rd rounder, and worst case a 4th rounder.

They wont have Spagnola. Which is what made that defense the unit that they were.

Hopefully that will hurt them the most.

Players make the scheme work... I'm sure they'll be just as good next season.

Not individually but collectively they have improved their defense. To say they haven't is foolish.
