Jerry Jones has said one of the biggest mistakes he made as Cowboys owner was to fire Chan Gailey after two seasons. That became a recurring theme as he laid the groundwork for his decision to bring Wade Phillips back.

"No, I have not talked to Jerry about that statement,'' said Gailey, who is now the head coach in Buffalo. "Jerry was very good to us while we were in Dallas.

"But I will not disagree with his statement.''

Gailey said he appreciates Jones' comments and hopes to tell him so this week in Indianapolis. And what about Phillips, who got a new contract?

"Yeah,'' Gailey said. "Wade owes me.''

grin.

I think Gailey is a good coach, but nothing special. But he certainly should have been given more time, especially with an aging and shallow team.

What if Irvin did not get injured on that fateful day in Philly. That 1999 team looked like a very good offense coming out of the gate that season, but went straight South after Irvin went down.

I hope Gailey does well in Buffalo. He always seemed like a good guy.

Gailey still likes Jerry

During the season, Jerry Jones said his biggest mistake -- or at least the action that he regrets the most -- in two decades of owning the Cowboys is firing Chan Gailey after two years. Gailey's 1998 and 1999 Cowboy teams were 10-6 and 8-8, respectively, but 0-2 in the playoffs. Compared to what happened after he left, however, that record was sensational. In the three years after Gailey's departure, Dallas was 15-33.

Gailey was hired in January to coach the Bills and he is in Indianapolis for the NFL scouting combine. Gailey said that he had not talked to Jones since Jones made that statement, but it was clear that Gailey appreciated it -- even though he joked about it.

"I will not disagree with his statement," Gailey said, smiling. "But at the same time, he's the owner. He's got to do what he thinks is best and right at the time. If you haven't made a mistake in this world -- and I'm not saying he did or didn't -- but if you haven't made a mistake in this world, then you haven't made decisions.
