Orlando Scandrick looks like a steal

Tim MacMahon

There was a silver lining to Terence Newman's groin injury. The Pro Bowler's absence gave fifth-round CB Orlando Scandrick the chance to prove he's ready to contribute on defense right away.

Scandrick played the slot with the first-team substitution packages against the Texans and performed well. He said the experience of going through a game plan -- the Cowboys treated the Governor's Cup game as a dress rehearsal -- was extremely valuable.

"Obviously, it's Newman's job," Scandrick said of the slot position in the nickel and dime. "It looks like I'm going to be his backup there. It was a chance for me to show that I could go out there and keep my composure and play."

It was also a continuation of the 5-10, 192-pound speedster's strong training camp and solid preseason. The Cowboys had him graded at least a couple rounds higher than the fifth, and he's lived up to expectations so far.

"He's done a lot of good things," Wade Phillips said, singling out Scandrick's technique and awareness. "We said that all along. He's really easy to coach."

While Scandrick appears ready to contribute to an NFL defense, he probably won't have a role other than special teams this season unless there's another cornerback injury. But Scandrick's presence assures that the Cowboys will be deep at CB even if Anthony Henry become a safety after this season.

Didn't a college coach who played against him say he was better than jenkins?

Most likely Jones. Scandrick had an unreal performance including a kick blocking and returning performance against UH a few years back and nearly single-handedly won that game.
FYI, Scandrick was not considered the best CB on Boise State last year, by the coaching staff and observers of the program.
That honor goes to Kyle Wilson. He will likely make a very good NFL cb as well. He is even more tenancious than Scandrick. He doesn't have Scandrick's knack for the big play but he is more solid, all-around, at the corner.

Scandrick was the one player I got right in my '08 mock draft (even though the round was wrong...):

Stash's Dallas Cowboys 2008 Mock Draft

Round 1 (a): Antoine Cason - CB -Arizona - 6’0” 190 lbs.

Naturally-gifted playmaker at a need position. Hard worker and solid character individual. A ballhawk with excellent anticipation and hands for the interception. Instincts, character and work ethic. Think Chris McAlister with a better attitude.

Round 1 (b): Limas Sweed - WR – Texas - 6’4” 212 lbs.

Rare size/speed combination. Smooth and agile with good change of direction for his size. Great hands and focus on the ball. Has the size to be a dominant red zone target. A leader with a solid work ethic and the drive to improve. If not for a wrist injury, a player of this caliber wouldn’t be available here.

Round 2: Ray Rice - RB - Rutgers - 5’9” 195 lbs.

Highly productive, versatile back. Thick and muscular with a solid lower frame. Can handle a full-time workload if necessary.Attacks the line of scrimmage with great power and low center of gravity. Great pass catcher and can handle blitz pickup as well. One of the draft’s most versatile running backs. Could either spell or eventually replace Marion Barber if necessary.

Round 3: Red Bryant - DT - Texas A&M - 6’5” 326 lbs

Tremendous size for nose tackle position. Very strong with a quick first step. An experienced four year starter and two-time team captain. Motivated, hard-working player who plays with an attitude. This pick would eventually allow the Cowboys to transition Ratliff to DE.

Round 4: Chilo Rachal - OG - Southern California - 6’5” 315 lbs.

Great size with the frame to get bigger. Excellent, explosive drive blocker with a teriffic hand punch. Experienced starter who plays with good leverage and technique. Would be an improvement over Kyle Kosier in a Hudson Houck power running line.

Round 5: In my ideal scenario, this pick has been trade to the Tennessee Titans for CB Adam Jones.

Round 6: Dominique Barber - S - Minnesota – 6’0” 211 lbs.

Solidly built prospect who has improved with each year of experience. A leader in the secondary with the speed to cover 3rd receivers. Was the best player on a poor Gophers defense. Brother of Cowboys running back Marion Barber III (which might even help in long-term contract talks). Can be a solid special teams contributor.

Round 7: Orlando Scandrick - CB- Boise State - 5’11” 188 lbs.

Developmental cornerback prospect with good size/speed combination. Uses his hands well and is also solid in run support. Durable player who is also a good special teamer. Could develop into a solid #3 corner.

Let me know what you guys think.

Nice to see that he's looking good so far.

That was a pretty bad mock draft, as were everyones. The only picks I agree with are Scandrick and Bryant. Sadly, Bryant went to the Seahawks.

I finally got to see what some of the fuss was all about regarding Orlando Scandrick. The guy can play. I saw a pass from Matt Schaub toward the sidelines that was batted down at the last second by Scandrick. It was a beautiful last second play that saved Dallas about 20 yards.

This kid is definitely going to be a player.

Who is now at SMU.

:)

Southern Methodist University. They should change their names from the Mustangs to the SMU Dickersons. :D

I wonder if June can really do some good there? And June needs to get back to the SMU roots and get those helmets back to the original white with the red stripe and red mustang outlined in blue.

Wasn't that one of the things that dropped Orlando Scandrick?

There was concern he might not pick up pro coaching quickly or some such?

I actually like your mock draft. I mean.. would I trade Jenkins and Felix for Cason and Limas? maybe. How's Ray Rice doing?

may turn out to be our best pick

While I hope he's a good pick, I'd hate to think that he's our best. Perhaps best mid rounder is a better way to think about it.

once they get drafted where they got drafted doesn't matter.

I absolutely agree with parcells on this, a good player is a good player who cares what round he came from.
