Orlando Scandrick looks like a steal

There was a silver lining to Terence Newman's groin injury. The Pro Bowler's absence gave fifth-round CB Orlando Scandrick the chance to prove he's ready to contribute on defense right away.
Scandrick played the slot with the first-team substitution packages against the Texans and performed well. He said the experience of going through a game plan -- the Cowboys treated the Governor's Cup game as a dress rehearsal -- was extremely valuable.
"Obviously, it's Newman's job," Scandrick said of the slot position in the nickel and dime. "It looks like I'm going to be his backup there. It was a chance for me to show that I could go out there and keep my composure and play."
It was also a continuation of the 5-10, 192-pound speedster's strong training camp and solid preseason. The Cowboys had him graded at least a couple rounds higher than the fifth, and he's lived up to expectations so far.
"He's done a lot of good things," Wade Phillips said, singling out Scandrick's technique and awareness. "We said that all along. He's really easy to coach."
While Scandrick appears ready to contribute to an NFL defense, he probably won't have a role other than special teams this season unless there's another cornerback injury. But Scandrick's presence assures that the Cowboys will be deep at CB even if Anthony Henry become a safety after this season.
