Pacman feeds the children and his ego

Pacman Jones passed out boxes of food and toiletries to needy people at a church in his old Atlanta neighborhood earlier this week. It was a noble deed that I'm sure had nothing to do with Pacman attempting to rehab his image so Sheriff Goodell would reinstate him.

Nevertheless, reporters and photographers caught wind of Pacman's appearance, so it became national news.

Somehow, I managed to miss this story until I read this week's edition of The Gameface bv Yahoo.com columnist Michael Silver. He linked to Pacman's charity appearance under LIES, LIES, LIES. He was referring to this quote.
"There are a few teams interested in me like the Detroit Lions, New England and (Miami) Dolphins," said Jones, speaking as though he expects to be reinstated soon. "But everyone knows I want to wear the star on my helmet, and play for Jerry Jones."
Detroit president Matt Millen made it as clear as day that the Lions have no interest in Pacman. The Patriots aren't interested, either. And I'm pretty sure that Pacman wouldn't fit Bill Parcells' no-thugs policy in Miami.

Pacman wants to believe that several teams are interested in his services. The reality is that the Cowboys are the only team willing to take a chance on him.

Terrell Owens, tennis enthusiast

Everyone knows how much Terrell Owens loves basketball. And he's pretty affectionate to the game he earns a living playing too.

But did anyone think that he's a tennis fan!?!?

It's true. T.O. has struck up a friendship with Andy Roddick, through a fitness guru out of Waco. The Original 81 was at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla this week to provide moral support. The New York Times' outstanding columnist, William Rhoden, was there to chronicle the goings on.

"You have to knock those guys off and solidify yourself as a consistent No. 1 guy, night in and night out, refusing to lose, coming from behind and winning matches -- that's what Federer has done, that's what Nadal has done," Owens said. "Until Andy beats those guys two or three times, he'll always be labeled as being on the cusp but never really getting to the top."

If it sounds like something Tony Romo's dealing with it, then maybe it is like something Tony Romo is dealing with, and, yes, Rhoden drew the comparison.
More poignant still was the mutual admiration that the tennis star and football playmaker seem to have for one another. And the Owens that Roddick knows behind closed doors.

"I wish a lot of the public saw what I saw," Roddick said Wednesday after a morning practice. "He's a pretty friendly guy, he'll meet people -- friends of mine -- who he doesn't really even know, and he's nothing but nice and sweet to them. I wish the public saw a little bit more of that side of him."

Receiver value down the board

Albert Breer

As was the case with the double-Jenkins edition of the Hash Mock this morning, ESPN's veteran draft guru Mel Kiper has the Cowboys taking Arkansas RB Felix Jones at 22 and Virginia Tech CB Brandon Flowers at 28.

And as you know, I think this scenario is no good for the Cowboys.

But if you ignore a couple of peculiar picks -- I like Branden Albert as much as the next guy, but fifth overall?!? -- you can see a greater trend evolving in this year's draft. Receivers are slipping down the board. Quickly.

Michigan State's Devin Thomas has completely his ascension to the top of a lot of position rankings, and while he's loaded with potential, that illustrates how this group isn't exactly the Class of 1996. Malcolm Kelly and Limas Sweed are in danger of falling out of the first round. So is DeSean Jackson.

At this point, it would almost qualify as surprising if Early Doucet or Mario Manningham were drafted in the Top 31.

That's why I'm starting to believe that the Cowboys might look just as hard at potential second-rounders like Cal's Lavelle Hawkins or Indiana's James Hardy, as they would any of the aforementioned receivers. The value there, at the bottom of Round 2, might just be that much better at the position.

Romo's officially more committed to football than Brady

12:54 PM Fri, Apr 04, 2008
Tim MacMahon

The Cowboys' off-season program was such a high priority for Tony Romo that he stayed in town instead of flying to LA to comfort hospitalized Jessica Simpson.

Tom Brady, on the other hand, skipped out on the start of the Patriots' off-season program. He was busy jetting around the world with Gisele.
Do you need any more proof (other than maybe a few Super Bowl rings) that Romo is a better guy to build a franchise around?

Cowboys a fit for Jenkins?

12:50 PM Fri, Apr 04, 2008

As is the case with all the top corners in the 2008 draft, evaluations of South Florida's Mike Jenkins vary wildly.

Some think he's a shutdown corner waiting to happen. Others question his drive and mentality towards the game. And there's even one expert out there who thinks he's good enough for a team to take a monumental risk, and draft him after he's already come off the board.

The idea I get? After talking to a couple coaches and scouts, the right environment could push him to become a Pro Bowl-level player.

"In college, his talent took over for him," South Florida secondary coach Troy Douglas said yesterday. "And in the NFL, you can't do that. Say, the Cowboys take him. The vets there, DeMarcus Ware, Terence Newman, Anthony Henry's a South Florida guy, Roy Williams, they won't let him slip.

"Plus I have to believe the coaches will push him through, because they've got other talented players. Here, it was him and Trae (Williams), then everyone else. In the NFL, everyone's good. When someone gets to him and says, 'This is the way we watch tape, the way we practice, the way we work,' he'll respond."

Do we overrate draft picks?

10:59 AM Fri, Apr 04, 2008

Todd Archer wants to know. He asks the question in this week's online column as it relates to the compensation the Cowboys and Titans can't agree on in the Pacman Jones trade talks.
Should the Cowboys give up a fourth-round pick for Jones? Since 2000, the Cowboys have drafted Kareem Larrimore (2000), Markus Steele (2001), Jamar Martin (2002), Bradie James (2003), Bruce Thornton (2004), Marion Barber (2005), Chris Canty (2005), Skyler Green (2006) and Doug Free (2007) in the fourth round.

Of those nine, only James, Barber and Canty have developed into starters (Free remains an unknown after seeing little to no action last season).

A fourth-round pick might be worth it if you're batting .333 in the fourth round over a seven-year period.

How about a fifth-round pick?

Since 2000, the Cowboys have drafted Michael Wiley (2000), Matt Lehr (2001), Pete Hunter (2002), Sean Ryan (2004) and Pat Watkins (2006) in Round 5. Lehr remains in the league as a backup. Hunter now plays for the Desperados in the Arena League. Ryan signed as a free agent with the Dolphins after being traded to the New York Jets and Watkins remains a potential starter here down the road.

Would you give up a fifth-round pick for Jones?

Patrick Hruby's released his second Absurd Quote Power Rankings, something that we spotted over at Pro Football Talk, and the Cowboys are well-represented.

Terrell Owens is third. Emmmitt Smith is fifth. And Patrick even put a native Texan, Roger Clemens, at the top.

Here are the trademark remarks that got Owens and Smith where they are on this list ...

OWENS: "That's my teammate ... (sniff) ... that's my ... (sniff) ... quarter ... (barely audible) ... back."

SMITH: "What happened tonight, the strength of the Patriots team got debacled."

Give T.O. credit. At least his quote appears to be in English.

Hash hands Cowboys Jones and Flowers

ESPN.com's Matt Mosley, the founder of this space, took some time to pinpoint the Cowboys' selections at 22nd and 28th overall for a third time.

On this go-round, he's got Dallas reaching a bit for a Razorback (not that one) and getting a need at corner taken care of thereafter.
22) Cowboys -- Felix Jones, RB, Arkansas: I think the Cowboys will decide between Jones and Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart. Both players are explosive, but the toe injury that Stewart has is a concern. Jerry Jones isn't as enamored with former Razorbacks as you might think, but Jones is the right guy.

28) Cowboys -- Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech: No matter what happens with Pacman, the Cowboys need another cornerback. Flowers isn't one of the elite corners in the draft, but he has good size (5-11, 192) and he's the best player on the board at this point.
Personally, I wouldn't spend a 1 on Jones. And by the time we get to 28th overall, there won't be a plethora of options at corner. But I would, without hesitation, taken Cason in that spot over Flowers. Maybe that's just me.

Dallas Cowboys NFL draft series: South Florida cornerback Mike Jenkins

MIKE JENKINS

Size: 5-foot-10, 197 pounds
Combine 40-yard dash time: 4.38

POSITIVES
Jenkins has, from an athletic standpoint, just about everything you'd ever want in a corner. He's strong to point where, despite doing 18 reps on the bench at the combine, a very good number for a corner, his coaches insist he can put it up in the mid-20s on a good day. He consistently has run in the 4.3s, and excels in man coverage. Has little problem keeping with receivers downfield, and has good instincts. Plus, he's explosive. Can change direction suddenly, and breaks on the ball quickly. He's fluid, and can flip and drop his hips without a hitch. Outstanding recovery speed, which allows him to take some chances. His potential is really unlimited, and he hasn't come close to fully tapping it yet. When he was challenged in 2007, against receivers like West Virginia's Darius Reynaud, he shone brightest. So the theory would go there that he will be challenged moreso as a pro, which could serve as a motivator.
