Phil Simms on the Cowboys

CBS' No. 1 crew is in town for Sunday's Chargers-Cowboys game. I had the opportunity to chat with analyst Phil Simms a few minutes ago.

On the Cowboys dreadful Decembers: "I'm not a history major. I don't care about previous seasons. NFL seasons are long and there are many twists and turns. You can say there are five separate seasons in every one full season. That's how much things change. But now is the time the story of this season will be written. As far as this entire season, expectations were high and rightfully so."

On a key play in Cowboys loss last week to the Giants: "That pass to Brandon Jacobs is one that will make you tear your hair out. The Cowboys are in safe coverage. The Giants complete a short pass to Brandon. The play should be over but 74 yards later they get a touchdown. Amazing."

On the Chargers: "The best thing to say is they are resourceful. They've been fighting through borderline devastating injuries. I thought they were damaged early but seven straight victories later they are more than still alive...They are a team that wins games through adversity. They have toughness and leadership."

It's his keen insight into the game I love the most. You can't learn this.

Everyone took awful angles on that play. Bradie James specifically, and Sensy got held but oh well.

What exactly do you expect him to say? They asked him what was a key play the Giants had and he said the Jacobs 75 yard run. End of answer.

He could have added the Hicks return. Dallas may have been able to overcome the Jacobs play since there was enough time on the clock but the Hicks return put us 2 scores down with time running out.

what high expectations did this team have.

Every magazine, website and warm body with a pulse picked them third in the division.

Local geniuses like emmitt smith and deion sanders said they were 6-8 win teams and that the blank would hit the fan by week 7 or 8. Dixon edwards, alvin harper and erik williams said romo stinks and is not any good and that he is the reason we cant win..

Dixon edwards said in may we didnt have one player worth watching...

so tell me again about the high expectations?

You beat me to it. There were no expectations for this team. Everyone and their brother had tossed them aside and left them for dead.

Now that December has rolled around, it's back to high expectations.

That's what caught my attention the most...and made me think Phil isn't too knowledgeable about all things Cowboys. There weren't too many mediots calling for Dallas to perform at an NFC East-leading level this season.

Yet another NFL expert bucks the trend.

He will rue the day he messed with CRAP!

Which reminds me. If that holding call didn't frustrate you enough, did you see the hold they called on Butler during the ensuing kickoff return?

Milder, plus farther away from the action.
