The first two interceptions of training camp were diving plays by fifth-round SS Mike Hamlin.
He went horizontal to snag a deflected ball during the opening practice. His pick today came off another deflection, but the difference was he tipped this ball to himself.
And Hamlin, whose vertical was measured at 37.5 inches at the scouting combine, went high off the Alamodome turf to do it.
Hamlin was lined up as the dime back, a linebacker/safety hybrid role created for Anthony Henry last year, when he dropped back into deep curl territory on the right hashmark. Jon Kitna tried to zip the ball to Martellus Bennett on a seam route about 10 yards behind Hamlin, who soared to knock the ball down with his right hand, then made a diving grab when the ball came down a couple of yards away.
"My main thing was just trying to get back to my drop," Hamlin said. "That's something I kind of struggling with. I was trying to get a feel for everything that was going on behind me. The quarterback threw it, and I kind of used my basketball athletic ability to go up and get it."
That's two picks in four pro practices for Hamlin, who had 14 career interceptions at Clemson.
"Hopefully," he said, "I'll have a lot more to come."
