Wade Phillips singled out Martellus Bennett for praise during his press conference before the afternoon practice.
"Try to get your best players on the field," Phillips said when discussing Bennett's role in the offense. "If he's one of those, and it looks like he will be, we'll try to utilize that."
Bennett might have been even better, at least as a receiver, during the afternoon practice. One play displayed his big-play ability, something the Cowboys could certainly use now that a certain receiver is munching popcorn in upstate New York.
Bennett lined up in the slot and ran a seam route. He got matched up on rookie cornerback Mike Mickens, who had decent coverage but no chance to stop the 6-6, 265-pound Bennett from catching Tony Romo's pass.
That's the problem Bennett presents defenses as a downfield target. He can blow by linebackers, and his big frame (and understanding of how to use his body from his days as a banger for the Texas A&M hoops squad) allows him to catch the ball over smaller defensive backs, as he did for a TD in the win over the Commanders.
