Patrick Crayton's reputation is that he's a solid possession receiver who doesn't concern defenses as a downfield threat.

"I'm trying to get out of that box," Crayton said. "Nobody wants to be put in a box. You want to be multifaceted."

Crayton doesn't have blazing speed by NFL receiver standards, but there are other ways to make big plays than running past defensive backs. Case in point: His leaping catch over Terence Newman on a pump-and-go this afternoon.

Newman didn't bite on Crayton's move and had good coverage. Tony Romo intentionally threw the ball behind Crayton to give him a chance to make the adjustment. Crayton stopped, soared and snatched the ball at his highest point, while Newman never got off the ground.

"You've got to want it," Crayton said. "You've got to treat the ball like it's yours every time it's in the air."

Cornerback competiton: Congratulations all around

Mike Jenkins doesn't see himself as being locked into fierce battle for a starting job.

"I'm not watching him at all," Jenkins said when asked whether he keeps an eye on Orlando Scandrick. "I don't feel like there's a competition, and I don't mean that in a bad way, so I don't want y'all to twist my words around. I just feel like we're coming out here, and both of us are doing the same thing we always do. We work hard.

"We congratulate each other and talk to each other. There are no hard feelings."

There have been plenty of causes for congratulations. Both second-year corners have consistently performed at a high level during camp. Neither one has given up a big play yet in 7-on-7 or team drills. And Wade Phillips marveled at their work during one-on-ones this morning.

"That might be as good as I've seen two corners playing one-on-one," Phillips said. "Scandrick and Jenkins were outstanding."

The Cowboys appear to have two capable, young cornerbacks competing for one job. It will probably be a difficult decision for the coaches because both players are making such strong cases.

Very exciting news. This is one of the battles that will go down to the last snap in pre-season, what a great problem to have.

Boy, I hope people do not take sides and cheer for Cowboys to fail like many did during the Carter-Hutchison era.

I really like both Jenkins and Scandrick. I wish both the best. I wish the best to Newman, Ball, Mickens, and Smith.

I still think the odds of both Jenkins and Scandrick putting Newman on the bench is very slim. It is nice t see they are trying to do that though.

I am just glad we have 3 starter caliber corners in case of an injury.

I would wager that 70% of our games, when we open on defense, it'll be in a nickel defense, thus making Newman, Jenkins, and Scandrick all starters. It's not hyperbole when people say the 3rd corner is a starter in today's NFL. It is.

Ah, that tricky Romo and Crayton.

Did anyone catch John Clayton saying how "Dallas needed a CB" after losing Henry and didn't get one.

What a joke.

Who has a better top three?

These are both excellent reports. I would love to see Crayton/Austin put together a battle like Scandrick and Jenkins are right now.

They are battling for the same position on the same side.

I was thinking the exact same thing. I avoid espn, but it was on and I couldn't help but watch since it was a Cowboys piece. I knew it was a mistake. They just spew crap. Our "not replacing Henry" was the worst move in the division? Really? REALLY?! What a joke. This team is gonna shut a lot of critics up.

I don't think theres much of a battle. Crayton is going to have a breakout year.

you can make a case for 2 teams in our division alone imo.

While I don't disagree that they'll be good, these two sophomores have proven very little.

Jenkins is most noted for not tackling Brandon Jacobs and Scandrick was a late round pick from a small school who was fourth on the depth chart last year. You can hardly blame the main stream media for taking the position that CB has the potential to be a trouble spot for the Cowboys.
