Albert Breer E-mail News tips

We're going to start a steady stream of this tonight. First up, fourth-year linebacker Kevin Burnett.

His reaction initial to the Pacman Jones trade?

"It's not a big surprise, I kinda knew it was going to happen," Burnett said. "It's good for us, and it could be bad for everyone else that has to play the Cowboys."

Burnett did say that he isn't worried about the conduct issue. And he won't prejudge his new teammate, either.

"I don't think it matters, one way or the other," Burnett said. "The past is the past. The bottom line is the guy can play football."

But he added that, with the respect he's got for the player mentor Calvin Hill and the Cowboys staff, it'd better work here for Jones. Because if doesn't work in Dallas for him, it probably won't work anywhere.

"The staff is going to help him adapt to his environment," Burnett said. "We have a great staff in place, we have people in place to help him out. There's no reason he should fall short. And if he does, that's sad for him, because he has all the resources here to help him as a football player and a person. I accept him with open arms. I'm going to do everything I can help him stay out of trouble."

With the acquisition of Pacman Jones, the Cowboys' depth chart at cornerback now looks like this

Terence Newman
Anthony Henry
Pacman Jones
Alan Ball
Evan Oglesby
Quincy Butler
Tyler Everett
Justin Phinisee
Jerron Wishom

Only Henry and Newman played significant, meaningful snaps for the team defensively last year, and it should be expected that the trade for Jones will not affect the club's draft plans. But it was asked of Jerry Jones on Tuesday whether or not he felt like a team needed three starting level corners in today's NFL. He quickly agreed that to win a championship, it's best you do, considering how more and more teams are spreading field with receiver-heavy sets.

"I think you've got to have more than three," Jones said. "Sure, if you can get you three of that quality, then you've really done a good job. We try to strive for that."

Now, it seems like they've got what they've strived for.

Did Jerry get jobbed?

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

The Pacman Jones trade might end up being a great deal for the Cowboys. He could be spectacular while filling two huge needs (cornerback and return man) if he can chip off the rust and manage to avoid the back seat of police cars.

But the Titans got a heck of a return, considering only one team would touch Pacman with a 10-foot pole (insert strip club joke here).

According to a source, the Cowboys will give up a fourth-round pick (the 126th selection overall) in this weekend's draft and could give up a 2009 draft pick depending on how much Jones plays this upcoming season. If he is not reinstated, the Titans would give a 2009 draft pick to the Cowboys.
This seems to be a case of Jerry falling in love with Pacman's talent and letting the Titans get leverage when they had no business doing so. At least he got some insurance in the deal, but Jerry didn't exactly drive a hard bargain for a guy bidding against himself.

From someone who was VERY against the TO signing 2 years ago, I'm just the opposite on getting Pacman.

At the very least-he'll be good for us for one year. If he screws up in '09, well-this was a no-risk deal to begin with.

Jerry got jobbed? Are you kidding me?

Jerry would love to give up that conditional pick next year because that means PacMan played up to the level of his talent which is top 10 first round talent. If Jerry does that he would give up a couple of mid round picks for a top flight corner with a VERY friendly contract.

If he doesn't get reinstated or messes up and doesn't play, Jerry gets a pick back. Someone please tell me the downside of that deal or how Jerry got jobbed?

A grown man needs a "staff" and "support team" to stay out of trouble? How have I managed without one all these years?

Wow I thought I was the only one who thought that. LOL

There is a conditional pick from next year as well though... and I STILL think its a good deal. PacMan is already proven as an IMPACT player. The picks are not.

I see your point, but remember that common sense isn't all that common. Pac-Man, like some other young guys with money, struggles to gain a sense of what his priorities are. There are quite a few folks who have squandered their chances. Here's hoping that Jones realizes how close he is to obscurity if he fails.

A man with problems does. Yet in the end, it's up to Adam Jones himself. The failure would not be the staff/support team's, but his own.

Todd Archer E-mail News tips

Because this trade had been talked about for so long most players were not surprised a deal for Pacman Jones was completed. Some saw it as a relief.

Jason Witten has been around for all of the recent additions of players with either perception, legal or all of the above issues. Here's what the Pro Bowl tight end had to say about Pacman:

"I think when people come in, they've been given a second chance and they grab on to it," Witten said. "Everybody understands it and we've been fortunate that enough guys have matured and enough have learned from their mistakes. Hopefully he's the same way because he's a great player.

At his golf tournament the other day, Terence Newman said the team should still hold cornerback high on the priority list during the weekend draft.

"You've got to look at the fact that he's not played football for a year," Newman said. "You don't know how much training he's done. You don't know anything about the guy. You definitely have to move on like you're not getting him even if you do have him because it takes time to acclimate to the speed of the game and the quickness of the guys. You definitely have to prepare to be safe and definitely get more guys."

I wonder what media types actually think going into these interviews what the players will say in these situations

I think only Clinton Portis is stupid enough to give the wrong answer

Pacman Jones Is A Finally A Cowboy–DFW Strip Clubs Rejoice
Filed under: Uncategorized — newyscruggs @ 7:01 pm

So who is throwing the official “Welcome to Texas” Pacman Jones party?

Baby Dolls, Silver City, or the Men’s Club? Who will pay for the rights to host this bash?

With a recession in DFW having Pacman Jones traded to the Cowboys will help a lot of strippers make rent, etc. Let it rain Pacman.

The Cowboys gave up a 4th round pick to Tennessee for the suspendeed cornerback.

There will be all types of conditions with the pick because Jones has yet to be re-instated to the NFL by commissioner Roger Goodell.

The Cowboys will come up with a new contract for him and if he can keep himself out of trouble he will really help the team.

Look for him to the the nickel back. Terence Newman and Anthony Henry will remain the starters.
Jones could be an assest in the return game. He’s taken four returns in for scores in his two year career.

This gives defensive coordinator Brian Stewart one of parts he wanted this offseason. A veteran cornerback was one, the other is a young draft pick. The club is will draft a corner on the first day because there is no guarantee Pacman will play this year.

The Cowboys are now the Raiders of the NFL, home of the misfits.

I can live with Pacman, but they can not make a trade for Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson. That would be too much drama for quarterback Tony Romo to deal with.

Pacman is a corner, he can’t demand the football.

It's finally over: Pacman's a Cowboy

April 23, 2008 8:03 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

One of the longest-running negotiations of the NFL's modern era is over. On Wednesday afternoon, the Titans and Cowboys ended their slow dance and agreed to the Pacman Jones trade.

Patrons of Dallas strip clubs were spotted running for the exits, according to several eyewitnesses. The Cowboys gave up a fourth-round choice in this year's draft and a conditional pick in 2009. If Pacman's not reinstated, the Titans will send the Cowboys a draft choice in 2009.

So that's really what we've been waiting on all this time? We kept hearing about this issue over Pacman's signing bonus money, but now he's agreed to donate $500,000 to the Titans' charity of choice.

In light of recent news that Pacman made "extortion" payments to the alleged gunman in a Las Vegas strip club shooting that left one man paralyzed and two others injured, it's hard to believe that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will be in a huge hurry to reinstate the Cowboys' cornerback. But Pacman says the commish knew all about the payments well before the story hit the Internet on Tuesday.

I don't think Cowboys owner Jerry Jones would've gone through with the trade if someone in the league office hadn't tipped him off that Pacman would be reinstated before training camp. Of course, that's provided that he stays out of trouble for the next three months, which might break his personal record.

What sort of player are the Cowboys receiving? Well, a member of the Titans organization recently told me that Pacman is a great competitor in practice and a solid teammate. His temper will flare at times on the practice field, but coaches have said it led to more inspired sessions.

Last week, Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and defensive end Chris Canty told me that they look forward to playing with Pacman. Canty, who's mother is a Methodist minister, spoke of redemption and said that he thinks the troubled cornerback will flourish in a new environment.

If Pacman's reinstated, the Cowboys will have obtained one of the most dangerous return men in football and a potential starting corner. As I wrote in a recent column, Jerry Jones is the king of second chances, in part, because he received his fair share. To most teams, Pacman would be considered fool's gold. To Jerry, the player's upside far outweighs the potential risk involved.

As you saw with the Tank Johnson signing, Jerry believes that his locker room can withstand the distractions that come with signing a troubled player. And so the Cowboys' reform school has taken on a new pupil.

Now we'll wait to see if he's allowed to attend class.

this should put away the speculation over whether CB is still high on our list w/ the acquisition of PacMan
