Playing for keeps
The Cowboys really won't be -- and yes, Cowboys Blog is well-aware that every game counts in the NFL -- until after the bye. The team's first three games following the week off are division games, two on the road. So by Thanksgiving, everyone should have a real good idea of where this team stands.
Here's what's happening around the NFC East, with each team's overall and division record attached:
EAGLES (2-3, 0-2)
The Philly defense has kept the team afloat through five games, but the Philadelphia Inquirer's Ray Parrillo thinks that creating takeaways could make a good group great. Remember Osi Umenyiora making the Eagles offensive line look like a turnstile to the quarterback? Well, Philly might have to throw Winston Justice out there again if Jon Runyan's slip in the cold tub results in any missed time, something he told the Courier-Post he doesn't expect. Meanwhile, Carol Doroba seems hopeful on the team's official site.
GIANTS (4-2, 2-1)
In the New York Daily News, columnist Flip Bondy typifies how The City is finally coming around on Eli Manning, and examines how perception is that QB's a riser while the statistically-similar Chad Pennington should be looking for a bus ticket. Newsday's Bob Glauber has, swallow hard, the Giants defense drawing comparisons to the 1985 Bears. Schematically, anyway. Meanwhile, in the Bergen Record, Tara Sullivan has Tiki Barber back-pedaling like Ronde on his past criticism of Manning.
Commanders (3-2, 1-1)
The Cowboys' problem has come in starting games. The Washington Post's Jason La Canfora looks into the 'Skins having the opposite problem: Inconsistency in finishing teams they have down off. The Washington Times' David Elfin says that Sean Taylor is finally making the big plays to live up to his head-hunting rep. Paul Woody looks at the 'Skins defense as a whole in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, concluding it's one of the league's best.
