Richard Bartel's last stand?

Richard Bartel is expected to play the entire preseason finale for two reasons: 1) No sense in risking an injury to Tony Romo or Brad Johnson; 2) the Cowboys want a long look at Bartel before determining whether his time at Valley Ranch is done.

Even if Bartel has a spectacular performance, it'd be tough to see a scenario where the Cowboys keep him on the 53-man roster. He has a strong arm, but he simply hasn't shown enough progress to merit a roster spot, especially with the Cowboys needing to carry several injured players on the 53 to start the season.

The Grapevine product, who was out of the Cowboys' plans after final cuts last season until Carolina picked up Matt Moore off waivers, is probably playing to stick on the practice squad for the second consecutive season.

He's the only in-house candidate to be scout-team QB, but he's competing against every other QB around the league who will be cut this week.

Bartel has only completed two passes to WRs, he better start finding some of those guys in this game or this is going to be ugly.

Bartel has a strong arm, but his accuracy, or lack thereof, is what concerns me.

Bartel is not the solution for a backup.

Bye Bartel. If Simms gets released i see us picking him up

What happened to the Beck discussions / rumor.... I thought this might actually happen, but nothing really has changed.

He'll be cut on Saturday.

If Bartel sucks ***, we'll probably pick up Beck.

I was listening to Cowboys radio a while ago and Spags said that some team, he thinks it was the Chiefs, attempted to sign Bartel off our practice squad late in the season and we gave him a 16K bonus to stay with us instead.

He accepted.

Spags also said Bartel will have to have a very, very good performance this Thursday if he wants to crack the 53. He needs to show that he is in command of the huddle and offense, know his checkdowns, where to go with the ball, make good decisions, things like that.

He would have to play well enough for the Cowboys to think, 'Oh no, he's caught another team's eye. If we let him go, we'll never get him to the practice squad.' Thinks they would like to put him on the practice squad, but you never know when your hand will be forced.

If you still don't think he's good enough to go on the 53, you take your chances like last year with Matt Moore and try to stash him on the practice squad.

Rob Phillips thinks it's unrealistic to think Bartel can make the roster with injury concerns at receiver and linebacker. It's still a good opportunity for him, thinks we'd like him on the practice squad.

Mickey also thinks a QB's skills might start to degenerate on the squad because they aren't starting and playing.

Wasn't Romo on the practice squad a couple years?
