For the second straight year Tony Romo will play in the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe in July, but this year he will be joined by teammate Terence Newman.

Newman is one of the 17 rookies in the field. Newman's love of golf is immense. Newman only picked up the game when the joined the Cowboys, and he can be found on the course almost all the time - after he's done with his football work for those wondering.

Romo finished 11th last year, one spot behind Stars' co-GM Brett Hull, with rounds of 77, 68 and 77. As good as that debut was, Romo was sixth among quarterbacks. Chris Chandler won the event with Mark Rypien Billy Joe Tolliver, Trent Dilfer and Tommy Maddox finishing in the top 10.

Romo will be playing the Torrey Pines South Course in San Diego next week as part of a made-for-TV event with Matt Lauer and Justin Timberlake. The round will air on June 15 before the final round of the U.S. Open on NBC.

Dilfer has lot more time to play on the links as he's been a backup for a while but also considerably older. If Romo was still our backup (thank God he's our starter), have no doubt his score would be very good too.

Oops, forgot to mention that Romo sure gets around.

I think June 17 is Father's Day & Romo part of number of athletes who will appear on made for tv show honoring their fathers & each athlete will discuss how his father affected him; show of course is prerecorded because our minicamp starts on June 17.

He's also in the Torrey Pines golf tournament which is sometime next week, probably late in the week so he doesn't miss OTAs. Now he's playing in another golf tournament sometime inJuly. He sure getting in as much golf as he can before TC & essentially NFL season begins.

BTW: Don't want anybody to get wrong impression; I've got absolutely no problem in Romo taking time to play golf cause I realize he spends a lot more time at VR then he people realize. While not a golfer myself, I've got friends who pretty good and they tell me it really forces them to focus & concentrate. They must shut out everything else (the noise from crowd & other player's hits, etc.) to make those putts, etc. Sounds to me like very good training for our QB.

Am surprised that Witten isn't there. Understand he's a good golfer too but not in Romo's league. Will be interesting to see how Newman plays. Wonder if Romo & Newman have a bet on between them for best score.

I heard that Romo, Justin Timberlake, and Matt Lauer have all been challenged to play Torrey Pines under the same conditions as the Pros will. Some organizers don't believe they can break 100. Mike & Mike in the Morning believe Romo is the only one of the 3 who could break 100 at Torrey Pines.

There is also an amateur named John Atkinson who won an essay and will play under the same conditions. He apparently is a cancer survivor.
