Next week the Cowboys scouting department will spend the week in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl, while the coaches will be in Fort Lauderdale for the Pro Bowl.

The Cowboys will have picks in the first, second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh rounds in the April draft. They gave up their fifth-rounder to Denver for the 2008 trade for guard Montrae Holland. And to revisit that deal: Holland played in six games over two seasons with two starts. He was inactive for every game in 2009 and pocketed $2 million.

And we move on ...

I'm not sure if they would get any compensatory picks for losing defensive end Chris Canty, defensive tackle Tank Johnson, linebacker Kevin Burnett and guard Joe Berger in free agency last off-season.

Jerry Jones said he would be in Mobile for part of next week before heading to the Pro Bowl practices, "to make sure my guys are getting in early," he joked.

Is it a disadvantage for the coaches not being at the Senior Bowl with this being their first chance to see the draft-eligible players practice?

"We take them down there because I value their input," Jones said. "The more input you can get on a regular basis I think the better you'll be prepared, but they don't see them like the scouts see them. I put more weights on the scouts. But on the other hand Wade Phillips himself is one of the best talent evaluators I've been around, period. That must have something to do with the fact he grew up around [football] at the kitchen table and from his 32 years of experience. He knows what a football player looks like."

I am completely shocked. I have on good authority the GM does not think these things are important. We must have a couple of rebels on the staff. They will not last long pulling this sort of thing. The GM is going to be pissed.

Making the roster as a backup and spot starter is about what you'd expect from a 5th rounder. It's not a pleasant surprise, but it's hardly a waste.

well techincally when we made the trade it was a 5th rounder 2 years ahead so it seemed more worth it at the time.

Very nice quote on Jerry regarding Phillips and I sense that is one reason Jerry likes working with him so much. He may be the best coach/talent evaluator we have had since Jimmy.

Not really...we got a guy who had quite a bit of starting experience, didnt cost alot of money and only cost a 5th.

Just because he wasnt better than Leonard Davis or Kyle Kosier doesnt mean he was a waste.

$2 million for riding the pine.....what a deal for Holland!

But who knows...maybe he was pretty good.

We had to wait until an injury to realize Austin's worth and FJ never got a bulk of the carries until the very end. More of an indictment on the ones making the starting lineup than the player.

And this doesn't surprise me. I do believe this is one of Wade's strengths.

While Jerry makes the final call, based mostly on the board put together by the Ciskowski and the scouts, I think Wade has a big say, especially on defensive guys like Jenkins and Spencer.

Yep, ditto.

I believe Wade was one of the real cheerleaders for getting Spencer in 2007 too.

Very true.

And what's sad is it's Todd's job to know. If he can't figure it out, then pick up the phone and call someone who does know. You know, report.

Wouldn't that mean you know he has to work at his job ?

If we had to activate him for a few games this year, I'm sure your opinion would change. :starspin
