Next week the Cowboys scouting department will spend the week in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl, while the coaches will be in Fort Lauderdale for the Pro Bowl.
The Cowboys will have picks in the first, second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh rounds in the April draft. They gave up their fifth-rounder to Denver for the 2008 trade for guard Montrae Holland. And to revisit that deal: Holland played in six games over two seasons with two starts. He was inactive for every game in 2009 and pocketed $2 million.
And we move on ...
I'm not sure if they would get any compensatory picks for losing defensive end Chris Canty, defensive tackle Tank Johnson, linebacker Kevin Burnett and guard Joe Berger in free agency last off-season.
Jerry Jones said he would be in Mobile for part of next week before heading to the Pro Bowl practices, "to make sure my guys are getting in early," he joked.
Is it a disadvantage for the coaches not being at the Senior Bowl with this being their first chance to see the draft-eligible players practice?
"We take them down there because I value their input," Jones said. "The more input you can get on a regular basis I think the better you'll be prepared, but they don't see them like the scouts see them. I put more weights on the scouts. But on the other hand Wade Phillips himself is one of the best talent evaluators I've been around, period. That must have something to do with the fact he grew up around [football] at the kitchen table and from his 32 years of experience. He knows what a football player looks like."
