Cowboys coach Wade Phillips and owner Jerry Jones spoke to the players during a defensive team meeting this morning at Valley Ranch, and Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh said that all signs point to Phillips returning next season.

Though Sensabaugh said that wasn't addressed directly, that's the feeling he came away with after the meeting.

"It sounds like [Phillips will be back]," Sensabaugh said. "I'd be shocked if he wasn't. He did a great job coaching this year. You could just see that we were a different football team from the beginning of the season to the end. We were able to overcome the hard times and it shows a lot about a team and that was a directive of how Wade is as a person: put the past behind you and keep going forward. That's how we played this year. We were able to bounce back from tough losses and won the division. That's pretty good.

"Wade is a good coach. He does a great job of keeping everybody positive, keeping everybody's confidence high. He does a great job of coaching. He's a great coach. It's good to play for a guy like Wade."

Sensabaugh said the meeting was primarily about how the Cowboys want to move forward primarily with the team they already have in place and build on what they accomplished this season.

"We do have a good team and just get ready for next year," Sensabaugh said.

Someone should have manned up and asked Sensabaugh why he didn't look for the ball.

Unfortunately, this quote is what makes yesterday's complete destruction so hard to take.

The Cowboys are a very good football team.

But the one that played yesterday wasn't.

Sensabaugh should be run out on the same rail with Wade.

Why he has had a great year overall for this team; was it bad yes but I understand he is still a good player and needs to be brought back

Also, I think people forget that he played with a cast on his arm for half the season.

I hated the way this team lost I think some players need to go and the coaching staff over hauled but you keep your better players and he was one of them

Why because he gave up a TD yesterday?

Because he's a mediocre safety, who will end up overpaid. How many plays did he make this year? Don't want to hear about what he didn't give up. How many plays did he actively make?

Sounds like the wholesale changes people were calling for here may not happen.

People so soon forget the days of Roy Williams getting roasted by H-Backs, Fullbacks, and Tight Ends.

Yep. That's all it takes here folks.

A guy has a bad play and that's all a lot of people will care to remember. I seem to recall plenty of people wanting to rid this team of Mike Jenkins after the first Giants game last year.

Good thing those people didn't get their way.

Ummm...you realise that by generally not giving up the big plays that it's making a play, right?

When you don't allow your team to be beaten deep the vast majority of the time then you've done your job. He did his and did it very well this year. He didn't really give up the big play, until yesterday, and he was pretty solid against the run as well. He did just what we needed him to at SS.

We need a FS, however, who goes out there and makes the ballhawk plays. But that's just my opinion.

A lot.

But my guess is you're looking for a highlight reel of interceptions and huge hits that make it on BSPN top 10 plays every week.

we have gone from a secondary giving up plays left right and center to a decent unit and people still moan - the defense did well to hold the score to 20 through 3 quarters yestersay due to the poor oline

what wholesale changes need to be made? We have a couple of holes to fill. We're damn close. Why blow everything up.

It's really comical. People slobber all over coaches like Jeff Fisher and Cowher, niether of whom YEAR IN AND YEAR out won anything. Yet if we go 11-5, win the division and win a playoff game, thats not viewed as progress. Even though thats the same type of thing they admire in those two guys. Its good enough for them to "get there" but its not good enough for the guys we have to do the same thing.

doesn't mean you lock up average players

Not giving up a play is not making a play. Plenty of decent safeties can allow a team to not give up a play if the pass rush is good enough and the scheme dictates it. A safety who is actively good changes the way an offense attacks you. No one fears Dallas' safeties because they either can't or don't make plays. Listen to other coaches when they talk about our team. Norv Turner, of the top of my head, didn't think our safeties were anything worth mentioning. I'm sure this is an opinion shared by many.

Not every team can be blessed with an Ed Reed type of safety. But I do see your point. Our secondary really doesn't have many "playmakers" outside of Jenkins. Very solid players, but not guys you throw away from.
