Spot relief on the way for Ware and Spencer

The Cowboys are looking at ways to rejuvenate their pass rush.

One way is to give outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer a few plays off during the course of the game. The two rarely came off the field in the first two games. That workload appeared to get to Spencer in the second half of the loss to the Giants.

Look for rookie Victor Butler, Steve Octavien and Curtis Johnson to slowly work into the rotation as soon as Monday night.

"We're working toward that,'' Wade Phillips said. "But DeMarcus is pretty phenomenal. He's had a lot of sacks - at least he did last year - a lot of sacks right at the end of the game. Now, we called timeout (New York) because he was tired at the end of the game and the clocked was stopped and we needed to stop them, but he's pretty phenomenal that way.''

It's not hard to justify sitting Spencer a series or two to get him some rest. That's a much more difficult decision to make with Ware.

"Yeah it's hard, but we need to some, maybe moreso early in the year than later,'' Phillips said.

We are not allowed to tell you what the Cowboys are doing at practice, but we can tell you some of the happenings at Valley Ranch, while wondering just how many people will eat the fried better at the State Fair.

And you should know you can have your fried butter with garlic, cherry or grape flavoring. Yeesh.

The Cowboys are practicing in their white throwback helmets for the second straight day. They will wear the throwback uniforms Oct. 11 at Kansas City, and the Chiefs will don the Dallas Texans look. Which got me to thinking, if you have Showtime check out the AFL documentary, "Full Color Football." It's excellent.

Tony Romo's father, Ramiro, is attending the practice. He makes it to a handful of sessions through the year and watches from the sidelines.

The ESPN crew of Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworski and Jon Gruden are watching practice too. They at Valley Ranch for their production meetings, and it appears ESPN will do some interviews from the luxury box that is next to the practice field.

why are they practicing in the throwbacks if they're not even gonna wear them next game?

Its not as if they tackle so it won't get dirty or anything.

Victor Butler ready, willing, wants to show he's able too

As David pointed out earlier, the Cowboys will look for ways to give DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer even the shortest of breaks Monday vs. Carolina so they can be at their peak late in games.

Victor Butler, the rookie linebacker, said he is ready to fill in Monday, and I think Curtis Johnson will be active as well for the first time, too.

Spencer, in particular, really has worn down the second halves of both games.

"You've got to be ready," said Butler, who said he did not take a defensive snap against New York last week. "You want guys to be effective so you've got to have them fresh. To have them fresh you've got to have guys behind them that in game-time situations will go above and beyond and make the big plays."
