Owners don't have to honor contracts, why should players?

I think the existing system is very equitable, like a play for performance. Players who don't perform get cut, regardless of contract. That's a good thing. Players who outperform their contracts squabble with management and apply some pain until they get paid. Also a good thing.

The only other equitable situation would be players who play their contract out to the letter, and owners who abide the same. I don't think anyone on this board wants guaranteed contracts.

^10 Mil for 3 years...Plax deserves at least double that. That must rank around the lowest pay of any top flight receiver.

He doesn't deserve anything except what he has contracted for, assuming he meets his contractual obligations. If he gets anything else it won't be because he deserves it. It will be because the team is feeling generous or because it has a gun held to its head.

No it won't, if he get's a new contract it will be because he has out-performed the current one and deserves to be paid what he is worth.

I like O'Hara(mostly bc he went to my old high school) but hes wrong. I didnt like it when Favre told Javon Walker what to do, sure enough Walker got hurt before his big deal with the Packers while Favre was raking in about 8-10 million a year plus endorsments. Didnt like it when McNabb got involved with T.O. and his contract.

Get paid while you can. Youd be a flat out idiot not to.

EXCLUSIVE: Shockey and Giants GM in shouting match
Friday, June 13, 2008

Jeremy Shockey and Giants general manager Jerry Reese got into a huge shouting match during the tight end's "visit" to minicamp, which concluded today at Giants Stadium.

This goes with the theory Shockey helped develop last Saturday that his problems with the Giants are not involved with football but with off-the-field issues.

Shockey said last week he was upset the Giants did not allow him to stay on the field during Super Bowl XLII and instead sent him up to coowner Steve Tisch's luxury box. He also blamed the Giants for spreading the rumors that he was upset and wanted a trade.

It's a good bet these were two of the elements brought up in the argument.

Even coach Tom Coughlin admitted Friday he hasn't seen any progress in Shockey's mental state over the past three days. "There is an issue, but it is not something that would prevent him from working," Coughlin added.

Meanwhile agent Drew Rosenhaus showed up at Giants Stadium on Friday apparently to speak with one of his clients, Plaxico Burress. Reese said he did not have any plans to meet with Rosenhaus.

"I’m just here to visit with my clients as they wrap up minicamp, to see the guys," Rosenhaus said. "That was my purpose for being here."

As far as mending the apparently shattered relationship between Shockey and the Giants front office, he said, "It’s an issue that we’re working on, that we’re talking to the team with. We’re just going to have to take it one day at a time."

When asked if Shockey wants to remain with the Giants, Rosenhaus said: "I don’t specifically have a way to address that at this time because Jeremy’s been very adamant about avoiding any public discussion about a situation.

"The best thing I can say about Jeremy’s situation is that we are talking to the team about some of the issues that exist and we hope to get that resolved."

Burress is trying to get as much money as he can... The Giants are trying to pay the cheapest price for Burress. Both are upset because they perceive his value to be different. It isn't whining, or the Giants being unfair, it's just a part of the business. They'll agree to a price eventually (or trade him) and no one will remember this come mid-september.

SHOCKEY, REESE IN A “SHOUTING MATCH”

Posted by Mike Florio on June 13, 2008, 7:03 p.m.

Vinny DiTrani of the Bergen Record reports that Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey and G.M. Jerry Reese got into a “huge shouting match” at Friday’s minicamp practice.

Shockey apparently is upset about leaks from the front office to the media regarding Shockey’s alleged unhappiness and desire for a trade.

“There is an issue,” coach Tom Coughlin said Friday, apparently before the shouting match, “but it is not something that would prevent him from working.”

It's a good idea, but with this one, the devil is in the details...

Do you pay each player based on individual stats? Like a RB gets $1000/yd and $6000/TD? So what if half the line goes down to an injury and you have a RB that has to work twice as hard for his yardage? How about if a coach pulls the starters in a blow-out to conserve them? I'm sure TO would want to stay in to continue to rack up huge stats to get that nice fat payday on Monday. Or how about pulling the starters for week 17? If you are a RB, I'm pretty sure you'd be pressuring your management to draft OL and pick-up OL in FA, and you don't need all your starters trying to tell you what to do in the offseason.

What about positions that defy statistical analysis? A CB like Nmandi Asomugha only got thrown at a league low 37 times (I may be wrong, but it was REALLY low), so his numbers are going to be a lot lower than say, Asante Samuel who was a gambler but gave up a lot of plays too. How are you going to keep players from freelancing (like a DE selling out the run to get a sack) to get a lot of stats since they won't have to pay for the bad plays? Or how about OL? Do you pay them on snaps? Do you suggest we pay franchise LTs the same as a back-up RG who got into the position because of injuries?

If you try to penalize a player for a bad play, is there a fair and equitable way to do that on a 37 yard TD run for example? Was it the DL who let the blocker release to the RILB? Was it the RILB or ROLB's fault for not sliding off the block? Was it the safety's fault for taking a bad angle? Or how about a CB who couldn't chase the RB down, aren't they supposed to be the fastest? Going back to the OL example, let's say you are saying so many dollars per play, but what if they gave up a sack? Penalize them, dock their pay? Well, what if they were supposed to get help to the outside according to the line call but their help wasn't there? Or how about a play that your position typically doesn't make (like a tackle by an offensive player on a INT)? If you remember back in 06, Clinton Portis hussled down the field to make a play on an INT return that saved a TD and separated his shoulder (it was preseason, but you can easily imagine it was reg season) and caused him to miss most of 06. In a pay for performance system, Portis had no incentive to make the play and that could have made the difference between win or lose.

Basically, any pay for performance system would have to have some form of judgment involved (what constitutes a good play and a bad play and to what extent do you reward that play) and after the gamechecks are sent out, I'm sure you'll have plenty of players lined up to seek clarification on why they only got paid X...

Like I said, the devil is in the details...

Am I the only one that thinks you honor the contract you signed? No one forced him to sign his present contract, it was his decision good or bad. Where does being honorable, honest, and a man of your word come in these days?

The honest and honorable player is in the same place as the honest and honarable owner....nowhere. If you don't live up to your contract you better believe they will lose money or get flat out cut, if you out-perform the contract you should rightfully be a top earner, pay the man what he is worth, period.

It works both ways, the owners are FAR less honarable than the players.

you are FORCED to sign a contract if you want to play in nfl... there is a player union that have deals with the NFL owners an agreement that ll contracts will be structured X way. YOU aren't forced to play in the nfl but if you do you are forced to a certain conract structure
