Slightly less premature 53-man roster projection

Tim MacMahon

After careful consideration, I've made a few minor tweaks to the last week's projected 53-man roster.
Warning: There's a potential heartbreaker for fans of Texas high school football and the Big 12 South. Follow the jump if you can handle that.

QB
Tony Romo
Brad Johnson
QB TBD
Comment: I'm betting the Cowboys will grab a young QB with some NFL experience off the waiver wire. Chris Simms and Josh McCown would be outstanding candidates if made available.

RB
Marion Barber
Felix Jones
Tashard Choice
Comment: With their performances in the preseason opener, the rookies strengthened the belief that the Cowboys will be in great shape at this position for a long time.

FB
Deon "Cricket" Anderson
Comment: Congrats to Cricket on his first TD in an NFL uniform, but I wouldn't recommend drafting him for your fantasy team.

TE
Jason Witten
Martellus Bennett
Tony Curtis
Comment: Bennett's R-rated assessment of his performance in San Diego appeared to be accurate, but it's way too early for second-round bust talk.

WR
Terrell Owens
Patrick Crayton
Sam Hurd
Miles Austin
Isaiah Stanback
Comment: Sorry, Texas Tech fans, but somebody's gotta go to make room for the third QB. The Woodlands' Danny Amendola will probably have to prove that he'll have a role this season - say, 8-10 snaps per game - to remain a Cowboy. And that will be tough, considering that Patrick Crayton does his best work in the slot.

OL
LT Flozell Adams
LG Kyle Kosier
C Andre Gurode
RG Leonard "Bigg" Davis
RT Marc Colombo
T/G Pat McQuistan
T/G Doug Free
G/C Cory Procter
G Joe Berger
G/T James Marten
Comment: If the backups don't play better the rest of the preseason, the Cowboys might trim a player from this unit.

DL
Chris Canty
Jay Ratliff
Marcus Spears
Tank Johnson
Jason Hatcher
Stephen Bowen
Comment: Bowen hasn't made the progress folks hoped he would, but he's not being pushed from below on the depth chart.

ILB
Bradie James
Zach Thomas
Kevin Burnett
Bobby Carpenter
Comment: Bobby Carpenter didn't do anything in the preseason opener to push for a significant role.

OLB
DeMarcus Ware
Greg Ellis
Anthony Spencer
Justin Rogers
Comment: Sixth-round pick Erik Walden has been working with the third-string.

CB
Terence Newman
Adam "Pacman" Jones
Anthony Henry
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Alan Ball
Comment: Ball, not Evan Oglesby, worked as the slot guy with the first-team substitution package against the Chargers.

S
Ken Hamlin
Roy Williams
Courtney Brown
Pat Watkins
Dowayne Davis
Comment: Wade Phillips likes Davis' potential on special teams, and it appeared Saturday night that the Cowboys could use some of those kind of guys.

SPEC.
P Mat McBriar
K Nick Folk
LS L.P. Ladouceur
Comment: Just guessing that McBriar's spot is safe despite a less-than-stellar outing against the Chargers.

Pretty much agree...although if niether of the TE's block better or progress more during the preseason I could see a veteran added as a 4th TE, at least to bridge the gap for some or all of this yr until Bennett and/or Curtis are more ready...not sure they'd keep Rogers over Walden though...Ball or Oglesby will be traded for a late rd pick or player (ie a backup QB, OL or TE perhaps)...not sure Davis has done enough yet to seal a spot either

Why is a 3rd QB needed? With what I saw last night, if Romo were to go down, I think Crayton or Stanback could provide just as much as Brad and Co. did.

_I am going to adjust this just alittle from what I saw Saturday night and hearing from players and coaches.

I say the Cowboys from what I saw Saturday night, Brad Johnson looked tired, old and what the heck, no big deal, the QB has to lead the team and be enthusiast. So, I say a trade or pick up Josh McCown or the player I like Chris Simms.

Comment: I still think Danny Amendola will make the team, as soon as FAT Wade Phillips gets off of his lazy butt, and work these guys, works himself, and has them training in pads, hitting on punt and kickoff teams, and settling on our speed guys on special teams, it will get better, what he should have done all along was have Adam Jones back there, but he is so stubborn. Yet, Wade Philllips cant get away with it now, because there are 4 scrimmages with the Denver Broncos, and he will have play them in pads etc. Players have to be in shape and ready to go, NO MORE EXCUSES, AND THIS ISNT CAMP MARSHMELLOW WADE, THIS IS PRO FOOTBALL, TIME FOR YOU TO GET OFF OF YOUR LAZY BUTT, GET SOME WEIGHT OFF OF THAT FAT GUT OF YOURS AND WORK YOURSELF, BUT WORK THE COWBOYS. THIS ISNT PEE WEE FOOTBALL WHERE YOU CAN REST PLAYERS AND EXPECT THEM TO BE READY!!!!!!!!!

OL

G Joe Berger
G/T James Marten
Comment: YES, the way proctor got pushed around yesterday, time to move on, he has been in the offseasoning conditioning for 4 years now, if he isnt that strong by now he never will be, and time is running out for james marten too, to me, Marten is a player motivated by money, he doesnt care a big about fans, or Cowboys history to be one of the best. This is the guy that was too light last year, he barely gained 20 pounds, but like Nate said, he is still not strong enough, this guy only cares about himself and money. I saw him in practices a year ago, and he didnt take the time at all to sign autographs or nothing, he was too good for that. That right there shows his motives. The Cowboys will have to draft a big nasty OG next year, and probably one more OT, as far as McQuistan, you might see him traded to Miami, since Coach Sparano was his project and Parcells project. He got McQuistan got pushed around alot yesterday too. Just something seems lacking with him, now Joe Berger has a little something, and so does the other big kid that was signed from San Diego and played for Miami too.
DL
Chris Canty
Jay Ratliff
Marcus Spears
Tank Johnson
Jason Hatcher
Stephen Bowen
Comment: Bowen hasn't made the progress folks hoped he would, but he's not being pushed from below on the depth chart. I agree with this.

ILB
Bradie James
Zach Thomas
Kevin Burnett
Bobby Carpenter
Comment: Its sill just alittle time for Carpenter, but like that pass he could have intercepted for a touchdown, he has got to step up, but yes, time is running out for him.
OLB
DeMarcus Ware
Greg Ellis
Anthony Spencer
Justin Rogers
Comment: I agree with this. Sixth-round pick Erik Walden has been working with the third-string.

CB
Terence Newman
Adam "Pacman" Jones
Anthony Henry
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Alan Ball
Comment: This I diagree with, Ball has some stuff, and he was having some trouble with his ankle, not getting alot of time, but Evan Olgesy is around the ball and forces things away from him. Now Ball might be traded or Olgesty might be traded, but we need to keep the best player with the most potential, and that is Olgesby. Ball, not Evan Oglesby, worked as the slot guy with the first-team substitution package against the Chargers.

S
Ken Hamlin
Roy Williams
Courtney Brown
Pat Watkins
Dowayne Davis
Comment: Wade Phillips likes Davis' potential on special teams, and it appeared Saturday night that the Cowboys could use some of those kind of guys. I agree with this.

I see this, possibly one or two of our offensive linemen will be traded, McQuistan or Proctor, maybe one of our WRs, and one of our CBs, either Ball or Olgesby, this will be used for position guys like Chris Simms, or a vet WR, I dont think we need one, that Miles Austin is going to step up and so will Stanback, just give Stanback some time. So, I see possibly trading for a WR or OT or OG, maybe a special teams ace too.

I just dont see Brad Johnson making the team, now I probably am wrong because lazy butt Wade Phlliips loves him, even though Brad is too old, no arm and he looks tired and like so what, no big deal, just no emotion on his part. Bartel I just am not sure about, he needs another year on practice squad, or something. Garrett should know, and Garrett should know about Brad Johnson too.

Walden > Rogers

I don't understand the point of keeping Dowayne Davis. 3rd string strong safety? Really?

Actually, he'd probably be the 4th guy in line to play strong safety considering we'd likely move Hamlin over if necessary. Complete waste of a roster spot.

At least we are not contemplating keeping 2 kickers this year.

With Henry potentially playing some FS there is no way i keep 5 S's over guys like Ball or Oglesby.

Not thrilled with 3 QBs over a 6th WR either.

its funny how guys like Bennett get the pass of "oh its too early to say hes a bust..." etc. that hes a rookie and needs time to work.

But Amendola, nope.

Everyone and their mothers up until Sat night were saying how Amendola is the next so and so; and that he will make the 53 man roster.

But now that he muffed a punt in his first ever NFL game writers are saying "told ya so..." as if they have been trying to give us a reality check on the undrafted FA the whole time. Its all BS, if Amendola comes out with 5-10 catches in the next game he'll be called our #2 WR.

That's what's wrong with special teams none of these guys need st to make this roster. Guys like bowen r wedge busters on other teams and guys like Sam hurd have 8 guys ready to take his job after 1 slip up. Every job on this team is taken and that's not a good thing. 53 is one thing let's see the 45 game day roster

I'm also surprised how Carpenter gets attacked, but Burnett - who I feel had a terrible game - gets a free pass?

I distinctly recall Carpenter making a few tackles after Burnett got faked out of his jock, or run over....
