A non-update Pacman update

Todd Archer E-mail News tips

Last week we reported sources indicate the Cowboys have had internal discussions about Adam "Pacman" Jones, the suspended Tennessee cornerback.

Here's what Stephen Jones had to say today about the team's possible interest in Pacman:

"That's way too early for us," Jones said. "We can't comment on a thing. He's a Tennessee Titan."

Because Pacman is under contract with the Titans, any comments would violate the NFL's tampering rules. Just a thought on this subject: I can see the Cowbooys having interest in Jones only if he is released after being reinstated by the league. I can't see the Cowboys giving up a draft pick (or picks) and assuming his contract. If he is cut, then I can see the Cowboys - or any team for that matter - doing a "make good" contract with him like Dallas essentially did with Tank Johnson.

i can't talk about it means i can't talk about it. if you want to generate some YIPPEE have at it, but this "i'm a mind-reader" mentality sets a lot of people up for disappointment.

Now that I won't gripe about even though I don't want this player.

I'm not sure what part of my post was confusing. I said if we don't trade for him but wait for him to be released (and I'm certain Tennessee has to) and he has a performance/nose clean based contract like Tank, that I won't gripe.

That is, until he screws up in our colors. Then I am going to want to Kerrigan his knees.

If nothing else, looks like there's interest in the convict on the part of the Cowboys.

Let's not forget his legal issues, eh?...Even as recently as 2 months ago he's been accused of hitting a woman in where?...You guessed it, a stripclub...The site where A LOT of his troubles have stemmed from...THIS after being suspended the entire 2007 season, anyone care to remember the last time that happened to an NFL player?...Is there really any doubt that this guy is going to be trouble, again?...Come on.

..with his father sitting on the Rules Committee of the NFL.

..but a culpable denial is very different from a definite no.

Yes, we are interested and yes some notes under the table about what it might take have been passed.

It might have gone something like this..

Stephen Jones-"Ring ring..this is Stephen Jones, how can I help you..?

Titan's GM-"Yeah Stephen, is your Dad around..?"

Stephen Jones-"No, he's not, he's over at the new stadium picking out the colors for the ladies bidets in the luxury suites, can I help you..?"

Titan GM- "Wow, that's an important decision. I hope when I grow up as a GM, I get to do that someday..cool..listen up..

..ask your Dad this..if a certain team had a certain problem CB on their team and he had a certain unsavory reputation for 'raining money' on stripper club dance floors and spitting on his female companions and that didn't fit into your team persona, what would your Dad do with that player..?

Hypothetically speaking of course..?"

Stephen Jones-"Oh that's an easy answer, I think I can handle this one..I think he'd say.. 'trade him to a team in the South, west of the Mississipi River and just west of a place known as The Big Thicket, city name starts with 'D' and contains 6 letters.."

Titan GM-"Just a minute, there, wow..I guess I should know that one..let's see Mapquest..Mapquest..'D'..six letters..hit 'search'..sure..huh..

..you mean Denton..Denton, Texas, Stephen..? I didn't think they had a pro football team there..?"

Stephen Jones-"No, not Denton, you idiot, it's Dallas..Dallas. Get it.?"

Titan GM- "oh yeah, right not Denton, Dallas. That's pretty interesting. And if a team did that, what would the trading team get for doing this, Stephen..?"

Stephen Jones- "they'd get some draft choices under their draft tree and a couple of pretty DCCs thrown in to sweeten the deal..How's that sound..?"

Titans GM-"Draft choices, really..? That's nice, we wouldn't really be all that particular about which draft picks you understand, just so long as we'd get something in return.

But the trading team would have to know which DCCs we are talking about in advance before exploring this. And Goodell would have to approve this before anything could happen, you know.

Hypothetically."

Stephen Jones-"Not a problem, we'll send you and Goodell some recent issues of the DCC Swimsuit Calendar and you can pick out any two months you want and tell Goodell he can pick one out, too, on us.

Deal..?"

Titans GM- "Oh boy, Stephen, this must be my lucky day, it's always a pleasure talking to the Jones Gang, er, Jones Family. We'll get back to you and tell your Dad not to use mauve color for those bidets. I made that mistake in my secretaries' little apt. I fixed up for her down in Miami and she just about blew a gasket when she saw it. Screamed it was too 90's. Had to rip 'em out and redo. Ok..?"

Stephen Jones- "Sure, nice talking to you, too, I'll be sure to tell him about those bidets, no problem, have a good day. Speak soon..?"

Click.

See, no problem.

Done deal.

You just have to know how to approach things stealthfully, use the right words and take care of the right people along the way..

That's all.

I'm not sure why Archer stated the part about waiting until he gets cut and signing him instead of trading for him. Based on his contract he has two years remaining on his deal and will be a free agent in 2010. 2008 is the last year guaranteed on his contract. Therefore, if he were to get in trouble again this season, the Cowboys would be on the hook for 1.742 million and then free to release him with no major cap ramifications in 2009. Dallas would not be on the hook for his signing bonus if they assume his contract but would be if they wait for his release and then sign Pacman.

In his final year of the 5yr $30 mil deal he signed (2009), he would be on the books for just over 2 mil. His rookie deal is actually very cap friendly at this point.

I agree with Todd Archer on this one. He will most likely be released. I think they have wanted to for quite a while. There isn't going to be a clamor for the guy despite his talent. He's hurt his marketability. No one else to blame.
