Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones said one of the reasons he liked Stephen McGee entering the draft was some "nine-ish" qualities the Aggie displayed in College Station.

In other words, the ability to make plays on the move, make something happen when things break down.
McGee was appreciative of the words from Jones, but understands there is a ton of work to be done.

"He's one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, so that's about as good a compliment as I can get," McGee said. "I don't think I'm close to anything that resembles No. 9 right now. I've got a long way to go, a lot of offense to learn. I'm excited to be learning from a guy like Tony Romo. It doesn't get any better than that, and a guy like Jon Kitna, a guy who's played 14 years, that's pretty awesome."

McGee will get a chance for the work this weekend, splitting the QB snaps with Rudy Carpenter. He showed a strong arm in the morning workout, but maybe too strong on the shorter routes.

What's the one thing he learned from Wade Wilson Friday morning?

"Just being quick and fast," McGee said. "There's different drops for different plays. It could be a five-step drop, but there's a big five and a quick five. There's different things you have to learn and he said that's the hardest part of learning the offense with different drops associated with different plays and how quick you have to be with the different routes they're running."

Good attitude, but I get the feeling this guy is a complete blank slate when it comes to the QB position.

Good attitude, wish we had some different coaches tutoring him though.

I do too. I'd be surprised to see him develop into a viable back up within his first 3 years. Pleasantly, of course...

There is an Eatman article in the Daily Zone and at dallascowboys.com on McGee if anyone has missed it.

McGee takes a biblical swipe at Leach

By Tom Orsborn on May 1, 09 02:16 PM | Permalink | Comments (0)

IRVING - Stephen McGee turned to the Bible on Friday to take a shot at Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.

On draft weekend, Leach told the Dallas Morning News he was "happy for Stephen McGee. The Dallas Cowboys like him more than his coaches at A&M did."

McGee said Leach's comments reminded him of a verse in Proverbs that says, "Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him yourself."

"I believe that in all my heart," McGee said. "I've always supported coach (Mike) Sherman and coach Fran (former A&M coach Dennis Franchione). I think they are great football coaches. I'm going to stick with Proverbs and not be a child."

Asked if he thought the flap caused by Leach was amusing, McGee said, "It's kind of amusing, just 'cause, understanding the source, I think. But it's just part of playing the position. You are always going to have people that are doubters. Playing quarterback, I've always had critics. It's nothing new to me."

I like McGee and all, but the link is asterisk'd out.
Not sure why, but I simply deleted that portion of the post and replaced it with a different blog entry.

I like his attitude. I hope he keeps it, works hard, and is able to one day be a fine backup QB for us.
