T.O. = Teammates (Won) Over
One rap that's dogged Terrell Owens for years is that he's a bad teammate, something that follows him all the way back to his days of battling for the ball with fellow Niner Jerry Rice. Well, we're here in the throes of the T.O.-Cowboy lovefest, so you can imagine how strongly that old sentiment is being rebuffed here.
And they got a anecote to back them up too. With 43 seconds left in Sunday's game, Pro Bowler Mat McBriar unleashed a 43-yard punt to dangerous return man Antwaan Randle El, who'd ripped off a 20-yard return early. Courtney Brown, in just his second game in the NFL and playing a vital role as a gunner on the punt team, came off the jam at the line and raced down to stop Randle El in his tracks. No return yardage there, and the Commanders started their last gasp attempt with 34 seconds left at their own 30.
After the game, Terrell Owens remembered this "little thing" that was actually a really big play, considering the circumstances. In addressing the team, Owens singled out Brown as one of the Cowboys' heroes in the win. Those words went a long way.
"It means a lot," Brown said yesterday. "He’s a classy guy, he’s been one since I’ve been on the team. Every part, small or big, he acknowledges it, whether it’s me or not. That’s the kind of guy he is."
