Tank Johnson changes number

Tank Johnson never really liked No. 66, so the nose tackle has switched to No. 95. He wore No. 99 when he was with the Bears. Marcus Dixon, who had No. 95 during the preseason, will wear No. 92 now that he is on the practice squad.

Newly-acquired guard Montrae Holland will wear No. 64.

It will be interesting to see what happens when Keith Davis officially joins the roster. He wore No. 29 during his second tour with the Cowboys, but rookie running back Tashard Choice has it now. Will he ask for No. 29 or go with No. 40, which is what he wore for the Cowboys in 2002?

I kind of liked the symbolism of the 66. 180 degrees from the 99 he wore as a Bear.

Oh well, it's just a number.

Well if you follow the order of the lines, all the dl wear 90s and the OL wear 60s. Just makes sense.

Funny, I still think of 95 and Fergie. So I guess since he'll be playing NT, it'll fit.

I almost wish Choice would change, just because it's so easy to confuse his 29 with Felix' 28... But I doubt Choice plays much from scrimmage anyway.

And I guess Bates' old number would be pretty fitting for Killa.

I still remember who the first Cowboys player was to have a number in the 90's. For years under Landry no one ever did.

When it first happened I was almost queasy about it I was so used to not seeing numbers in the 90's.

Anyone know without looking it up who the first was?

I think it was Brooks in 1985. His first name escapes me.

Kevin Brooks is what I was thinking, but I can't remember the number if it was him.

Thanks Speed. He later took his life after a series of problems "bacame too much," according to family members.

Chad Hennings wore number 95, and he had a decent career with the Cowboys, so maybe 95 will work for Tank.

I can't stand it when players change their numbers after the fans are already used to their original number.

First play of preseason in San Diego, Roy makes a tackle at the LOS and I'm thinking, "38? Who's th- ohhh yeah, that's right."

That's what made Tank at 66 so cool, to me at least. He was bucking the trend, plus as Hos said, it's 180 degrees from his old number.

I also like when the "typical" numbers aren't picked... like star CBs generally will wear a number in the 20s or low 30s, but Terence Newman went with 41.

I hate that LeBron, a "next-big-thing" candidate entering the NBA, went with MJ's 23 (even though he wore it in HS). Pick a unique number for yourself and make it your own... 23 will always be Mike's.

It was cool back when Keyshawn picked 19 with the Jets, but I'm not a fan of WRs picking a number in the teens anymore... it's just become so trendy.

Yep, given this a lot of thought.

Keith Davis didn't ask Tashard Choice about No. 29

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Safety/special teams ace Keith Davis hasn't officially re-signed with the Cowboys yet, so we're not sure who will be gone.

Rookie RB Tashard Choice, who wears No. 29, said Davis didn't mention the number when they met. Choice might be willing to give Davis his old number for the right price, but there's one big problem.

"There aren't any more numbers that I wear," Choice said. "All the 20s are gone."

Well, technically, No. 22 is available. That's what Choice wore at Georgia Tech. However, you shouldn't expect a Cowboy to wear Emmitt Smith's number for some time.

Depending on what the Cowboys decide to do with their cornerback surplus, No. 20 (Alan Ball) or No. 23 (Evan Oglesby) could be available soon.

Tank Johnson changes number

Nose tackle Tank Johnson has switched jersey numbers from 66 to 95.

95 came open when Marcus Dixon was cut. Dixon was given 92 when he signed back to the practice squad.

Johnson said 95 fits him better than 66.

"9 to 5 is just like all day, 9 to 5 is how I work, you know what I'm saying," Johnson said. "I love the number. I was comfortable in 66, but once a 90-number got free, I wanted to just go ahead and jump on it because I don't what to be the ugly one on the line."

Same here, it represented a fresh start.

It did make for a little confusion between Tank and Spears, though.

Good luck with #95!
