NEWMAN CALLS WILLIAMS “A DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS”
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 27, 2008, 1:48 p.m.
After signing a long-term contract extension that will likely keep him in Dallas for the rest of his career, Cowboys cornerback Terence Newman gave an interview to Mike Doocy of Fox 4 in Dallas. And in that interview, he had some critical things to say about a teammate who may not be in Dallas much longer.

When asked about safety Roy Williams, Newman started off by saying that Williams had shown talent in coverage earlier in his career, but then he veered off course and added, “He’s the same guy, I think, he just sometimes gets kind of a deer in the headlights reaction, some plays. . . . He had a bad season last year, as far as coverage.”

Later in the interview, Newman again started off defending his teammate, only to criticize him again. When asked directly whether Williams hurt the team, Newman answered, “I definitely don’t think he’s a liability.” But then he added of Williams, “He’s got to keep his weight down and work in the weight room, getting stronger.”

Although Newman didn’t sound like he was trying to rip Williams, he did sound as though he wasn’t particularly impressed with Williams. That could be a sign that if Williams doesn’t last much longer with the Cowboys, his teammates won’t be terribly disappointed.

One person Newman is impressed with is fellow cornerback Pacman Jones. Said Newman of Jones, “The guy just seems cool as heck.”

The full interview is at DC Fanatic.

Now that is sensationalistic journalism. He doesn't know how his teammates are going to feel. I'd imagine most of them will be disappointed if Roy has a bad year. I certainly hope so. Everyone sounds to me like they are interested in Roy having a good year. They are depending on him.

I think the deer have a genuine, liable harrassment case here. What? We saying that they're "scared" when confronted by 3000 lbs of metal? Are we callin' them "sissies"? "Go run and hide behind that tree..........NANCY."
I think they could win.

That's the problem...they don't run anywhere. They stand there with eyes as big as saucers in a paniced freeze...sorta like Roy Williams when he doesn't recognize his responsibility in coverage right away.

I'm still the juror standing firm. Circumstancial evidence as far as I'm concerned. We see him on the field. 3 hours of Roy. That's it. The rest is gossip, IMO of course.

Jobber, you don't think that the rest of the team are not fully aware of Roy's deficiencies by now? You don't think that they just might be willing to let someone else play and maybe play better?

Burm, I think this is up to the coaching staff to find ways in utilizing Roy's strength(s). We seem to find the weaknesses yet we ALL know his strenghts. That's what I think the team is saying. JMO, of course. Campo may be able to help with this.

I'm sure he means no harm, but Newman needs to be more careful with what he says.

Maybe they don't move when they get spotlighted. So what? It's not like they are overrated, overpaid, overexposed and underperforming. Why insult a harmless group of animals like that? There are many myths about deer.... Why pile on?

I question whether Roy has enough strengths to matter anymore. No big hits, no game changing plays. Liability in coverage- WE ALL KNOW THAT.
Without the big hits or game changing plays, he is a minus.

Make him want to retire or opt-out and return any leftover bonus money. :laugh2:

What a foolish thing to say. If Roy leaves we will have big problems in our secondary.

The same thing was said to me my second year. I didn't say anything about it. I didn't play very well. At times, I looked like a deer in the headlights. I mean, that was Bill Parcells' comments. I'm not going to argue, I was bad.

Newman took the blame then. Just as most football players do when their mistakes cost teams games.

Thank you Terence Newman.

I argued this to death with a certain poster on this board. Terence Newman is a fantastic player but he was extremely mediore his 2nd season.

He played the whole season with a knee injury. He played through it and no one in the media ever knew he was hurt until 05.

Throw in the fact that We had no pass rush and lance frazier and lynn scott/tony dixon were playing the other safety and corner spot and there is no way he could have had a good year.

It's a relative term.

Terrence Newman is an elite player - "bad" for him would be a heck of a season for Pete Hunter. He was clearly disappointed in his play, which is one of the things you've got to love about him.

Agree... Except, remembering back, I thought it was the first year, not second year...

TNew had a great rookie year. Then he injured his knee early on in season 2, tried to play through it, and tried to protect it. Add to the fact that the secondary was a mess as well and I personally do not think he was all that much worse then as a rookie. And by the end of the season his knee had gotten better and he got better as well. By the end of the season he was playing about as well as his rookie year.

TNew says..

"You can't make everybody happy, and not everybody's in this locker room," Newman said. "If you're in this locker room and you understand what's going on, that's one thing. Outside people can think whatever they want. It doesn't really matter to us."

Man. I think this says it all.

The players themselves can say things to each or about each other but those outside don't understand how things are and shouldn't try to interprete what is being said to make up thier own agendas or to pit a player against a player or to try to scramble what a player is saying to make it say something else.

How refreshing to hear this from TNew.

These players for over 4 years have been screened from talking to reporters by BP and now last year and this offseason they have been freed from that.

Now we all know why BP held the reins so tight.

The vast majority of these players don't understand the media game. And a number of them are just not careful with what they say and to whom.

I hope this improves before the season starts, because with all the exposure coming with HBO in TC and the media coverage coming this season, these players are going to create a lot of self-inflicted injuries with their comments otherwise.

Sure hope the organization has some player meetings about what to say and what to do in TC. Otherwise, this could get very dicey. As I don't think 'Camp Cupcake' is going to work for that series.

They are going to be looking for controversy and drama.

Things we don't need anymore of this off-season.
