Let's be honest about the Cowboys defense for a moment.

They didn't strike fear into anybody.

But that doesn't mean they weren't good.

This is what Terence Newman said to Joe Trahan of Ch. 8 about the defense: "We're pretty simple on our defense, I think. We line up and teams are calling out what we're doing. In the middle of games, they're calling out, 'OK, he's coming, he's coming,' and they're right."

So.

Newman forgets the secondary played with rookies Mike Jenkins, Orlando Scandrick and off-for-a-year Pacman Jones.

Several NFL scouts said Jones played like a street player and not as if he had any formal football training.

Newman himself missed six games due to injury. Strong safety Roy Williams didn't fit the defensive scheme and played only three games due to injury. Keith Davis and Patrick Watkins were banged up most of the year.

There is only so much creativity a secondary coach or defensive coordinator can do.

Newman is an excellent corner, but he should look at the defense again.

Bradie James had his best year as a pro last year, though he didn't earn a Pro Bowl berth, then DeMarcus Ware was fantastic. Greg Ellis should have been used more but the coaches gave Anthony Spencer extra playing time. Spencer was average at best.

Jay Ratliff earned a Pro Bowl berth. While Chris Canty didn't make the plays you noticed, the Giants did by giving him a nice contract to leave Dallas. Marcus Spears was pretty good.

Tank Johnson was below average. Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher showed spurts.

So, while Newman wants the defense to be more aggressive, you have to have the talent to do so. The Steelers and Giants have better talent on defense than the Cowboys.

For the year Ware had there's a reason James Harrison got the defensive MVP award. Impact plays. Plays that win games. Harrison made a little bit more than Ware.

But Ware will become the highest paid defensive player in the game because he's better than Harrison and Julius Peppers.

Sometimes its not about the scheme but the players.

We've taken plenty of shots at Wade Phillips on the blog, but it's unfair to get on him about the defense. The defense was the best part of the team last year.

There were more complaints about the offense during the season than the defense. Getting on the defense is wrong.

Assuming we stay healthy this year, I guess we'll show more looks.

Scandrick and Jenkins aren't rookies anymore - and I think the coaching staff trusts Scandrick, at least.

Hopefully Newman stays healthy.

I'm assuming we draft a Safety, but regardless, Sensabaugh probably fits better into this defense than R Williams.

And Spencer really needs to keep improving.

Finally, Brooking is comfortable with this defensive sheme.

I say we work a modern version of the Hershel Walker trade by offering Ware for a boatload of picks. :)

yeah but what gets me on the defense last year is this;
Newman, Roy Williams S, Carpenter, Spencer, Ware, Ellis, Spears, Jenkins =
8 players last year, (with adam jones that made 9 number one draft picks on defense;

then you had Hamlin, Tank Johnson, Burnett, all number 2 draft picks;

that right there is 12 playes on defense, to me, that shows the teaching part to these players and utilizing their talents wasnt used correctly

that stinks, 9 number one picks last year on defense, and 3 number 2 picks, that just stinks, that should have been a very dominant defense, but it wasnt, why?

I think it's easy to complain when the season doesn't end like you would like. But if teams saw Bradie James or Anthony Henry coming, they certainly didn't do a good job of picking it up. I'm sure what they saw coming was our base pressure with the line and OLBs, and they better know that DeMarcus Ware is coming.

If Newman wants us to blitz more in addition to our base pressure, then he and the other defensive backs have to show they can handle the coverage responsibilities. I know he's a confident guy and probably thinks the coaches should trust the DBs more, but they have to prove they are worthy of leaving on an island.

If Ken Hamlin falls on DeMarcus Ware's fumble against the Ravens, who's the defensive MVP? If he picks it up clean, he could have returned it.

Give Dallas an athletic safety and let's see who has the better defense next year. Dallas' defense dominated both the Giants and Steelers in December.

DOMINATED THEM!

"Greg Ellis should have been used more".:lmao:

You mean the guy who had 3 sacks during the first 9 or 10 games. Do you mean the guy that picked on the Giants' backup RT? The guy that refused to come off the field and cost Dallas a timeout should have played less. Do you mean the guy that whined and ran to the owner about "how he was being used in the defense", or the guy that whined about "not starting" and got his way by "starting the game"? How about letting the 26th pick of the draft do what he was drafted to do? Ellis' diminsishing returns were very evident last year. He's over paid and in decline and blocking a younger, faster, and very strong player.

Anthony Spencer did what the coaches asked him to do. He played first and second down. He didn't get to play in the sub-packages and on third down.

Why is Ellis still here? He's not even close to being worth $ 5 million plus dollars.

His days are numbered, imvso. I'd be shocked it that iplayer was here next year.

By the way, Amonte Toomer is still running. TD Giants 7-0

If you can't "coach the team", you and JJT should go write for Days of Our Lives. Instead of trying to keep Newman's name in the headlines and misrepresenting or misinterpreting him, the DMN should try soap opera writing. You can have all the "drama" you want.

You get to create it.

I think Ken Hamlin is overrated... He's got to prove me wrong this year. I think Dallas NEEDS to give Bradie James some help inside, I have a feeling Brooking isn't the answer.
