Let's be honest about the Cowboys defense for a moment.
They didn't strike fear into anybody.
But that doesn't mean they weren't good.
This is what Terence Newman said to Joe Trahan of Ch. 8 about the defense: "We're pretty simple on our defense, I think. We line up and teams are calling out what we're doing. In the middle of games, they're calling out, 'OK, he's coming, he's coming,' and they're right."
So.
Newman forgets the secondary played with rookies Mike Jenkins, Orlando Scandrick and off-for-a-year Pacman Jones.
Several NFL scouts said Jones played like a street player and not as if he had any formal football training.
Newman himself missed six games due to injury. Strong safety Roy Williams didn't fit the defensive scheme and played only three games due to injury. Keith Davis and Patrick Watkins were banged up most of the year.
There is only so much creativity a secondary coach or defensive coordinator can do.
Newman is an excellent corner, but he should look at the defense again.
Bradie James had his best year as a pro last year, though he didn't earn a Pro Bowl berth, then DeMarcus Ware was fantastic. Greg Ellis should have been used more but the coaches gave Anthony Spencer extra playing time. Spencer was average at best.
Jay Ratliff earned a Pro Bowl berth. While Chris Canty didn't make the plays you noticed, the Giants did by giving him a nice contract to leave Dallas. Marcus Spears was pretty good.
Tank Johnson was below average. Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher showed spurts.
So, while Newman wants the defense to be more aggressive, you have to have the talent to do so. The Steelers and Giants have better talent on defense than the Cowboys.
For the year Ware had there's a reason James Harrison got the defensive MVP award. Impact plays. Plays that win games. Harrison made a little bit more than Ware.
But Ware will become the highest paid defensive player in the game because he's better than Harrison and Julius Peppers.
Sometimes its not about the scheme but the players.
We've taken plenty of shots at Wade Phillips on the blog, but it's unfair to get on him about the defense. The defense was the best part of the team last year.
There were more complaints about the offense during the season than the defense. Getting on the defense is wrong.
