Pro Bowl cornerback Terence Newman's availability for Sunday's season opener in Cleveland is still in question, coach Wade Phillips said Thursday.

Newman, who pulled his groin July 28 and did not play in any preseason games, has had limited participation in the last two practices. Phillips said the Cowboys will continue being cautious with Newman and could start Adam "Pacman" Jones in his place at left cornerback.

Phillips said he cannot definitely determine yet whether Newman will play against the Browns. When Newman came back from a foot injury last season, he worked as the nickel cornerback for two games before returning to the starting lineup. Phillips said the Cowboys might take a similar approach with Newman this season.

"I don't think he's completely back yet," Phillips said. "I'd say that's where we are, so that's why we're being cautious. We'll see how he feels tomorrow."

It's a groin injury.

nobody knows this yet. without tnew we have 1 injury-prone starter, a guy who hasn't played in a year, and 2 rookies.

i'll go ahead and say it... if Tnew does not play, we will lose this game. problem is that if we move henry inside to play winslow (which they have to do), that leave Pacman (his first regular season game in over a year) and Jenkins (his first game ever) to cover Edwards and Stallworth. That is not a good matchup for us at all. On another note, I am sick of the misinformation from VR, all week we have heard that Newman fully participated in practice and all of a sudden it's "we don't know" ....

He was just saying Newman was a guy that needs to be eased in to practice, etc. Wade also was asked if Pacman would start and he left it open that its possible. But what Timmy fails to understand that its very possible that Pacman, Henry, and Newman will all start so that Henry can cover Winslow.

This sucks but it is the one of the main reasons we drafted two CBs and picked up Adam. It may not work out for the best this game but will pay off down the road. Regardless, I think we still win.

Based on a Wade blurb in that article, he is fine but Wade will see how he is Friday. He sounds fine to me.
