When Brett Favre retired from the Green Bay Packers way back in March of 2008, I mentioned that he might have a future in a NFL broadcast booth or studio. I guess that remains a strong possibility.
The best current fit for Favre?
I'll say ESPN's Monday Night Football booth where he could replace Favre-o-phile Tony Kornheiser in the three-man booth. ESPN could then re-define Kornheiser's role by placing him on the pre- and post-game show as its very own Andy Rooney. It's a win-win for the network. A three-man booth is a good place to start for a rookie broadcaster.
And as anyone who has watched ESPN over the last couple of years knows...ESPN is infatuated with Favre.
Here's the morning line on where Favre might wind up:
ESPN: The heavy favorite at 1-to-2.
NBC: Network sports czar Dick Ebersol last year called Favre "not only one of the great athletes of our time but also a truly genuine person with an extremely engaging personality." But there doesn't appear room in a Michaels-Madden booth. As for the studio show, it already boasts a cast of 1000s. Tiki and Bettis would have to be exiled for Favre to make it there. Odds: 10-to-1.
Fox: Aikman ain't working in a 3-man booth. Mike Strahan took the studio spot that had Favre's name on it. Kenny Albert-Daryl Johnston-Brett Favre with Tony Siragusa moving from the sidelines to another booth? Last year, Fox Sports president Ed Goren called Favre "a terrific personality" and said "any network would be lucky to have him." Odds: 20-to-1.
CBS: The network remains quarterback heavy with Phil Simms, Dan Marino and Boomer Esiason. But Bill Cowher isn't a lifer. Then again, Warren Sapp has his eye on that prize. CBS wasn't interested last year. It should be interested this year. Odds: 30-to-1.
NFL Network:Would have to put Favre in the booth for the network to maximize exposure. Bob Papa and Cris Collinsworth had a great debut season. Would NFLN risk messing with the chemistry? It would have to. Odds: 3-to-1.
But what if Favre is more Montana behind the mike than Simms- or Aikman- esque? He still gets a couple of years to prove he can do it.
