The power of David Buehler
Todd Archer/Reporter

Clearly the Cowboys special teams' unit has improved greatly. One reason - David Buehler.

While some thought it was strange to draft a kicker at the time, Buehler had three touchbacks Monday against Carolina, giving him seven on the season.

Since 1991, the seven touchbacks are the seventh most in a season by a Cowboys kicker. We'll attempt to track the stat back further as we go on.

In case you're wondering, here's how Buehler stacks up:

27 - Lin Elliott, 1992
17 - Toby Gowin, 1998
12 - Toby Gowin, 1999
11 - Toby Gowin, 1997
11 - Eddie Murray, 1993
8 - Micah Knorr, 2000

:lmao2: I almost forgot about Micah Knorr. Isn't he the kicker that got injured in one of our Thanksgiving Day pregame warmups because his foot got stepped on by a horse?

Ahhh...those were the days...

Thing is Buehler does not have to kick the low line drive to get it in the endzone. He is able to have good height to the kick and still puts it in the endzone

Lin Elliot in 92, that was before the Kick ball and we kicked off from the 25 right? Impressive.

Actually kicked off from the 35 and I believe the "kick" ball is a disadvantage not an advantage.

I'd be more interested in seeing how he compares to other kickers around the league today vs. previous Cowboys kickers.

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Tim Seder.

Oh, duh, thats right. They moved it back for more returns, and the normal ball..i'm an idiot. If Buehler played back then the return team wouldnt even need to come on the field.

What about the tee heights? I can't remember which year they lowered the tee heights restrictions to their current height.

Edit:

Found my own answer. It was in 1994 when the NFL made the tee height rule change.

1994

The starting point of all kickoffs will be the kicking teams 30 yard line (moved back 5 yards).

Kickoff tees used can be no more than one inch in height (previously 3 inches).

How about the fans that said we wasted a pick on buehler?

The coverage teams were awesome last night. Buehler has been huge, but everybody else is doing better too.

Hostile is a great guy, and I enjoy reading his posts, but if this makes him upset I'll just have to live with it. Thus far our Kicker was the best darn draft pick this season and he's given us HUGE rewards thus far for the pick.

Good point, however, those two Butler sacks sure looked good last night;)
