Things to watch at rookie minicamp

You can only tell so much by watching guys runs around in helmets and shorts, but here are some of the things I'll be keeping an eye on this weekend:

*We know third-round LB Jason Williams is a workout wonder. How does his speed translate to the football field? It'll be especially interesting to see how he fares in pass coverage, since it's possible that he could play in nickel and dime packages.

*Virginia WR Kevin Ogletree is probably the undrafted free agent with the best chance to make the team. The competition between him and Oklahoma WR Manuel Johnson, a seventh-round pick, starts today.

*It was obvious after last year's rookie minicamp that Orlando Scandrick had an opportunity to make an immediate impact. Could we see the same thing out of one of the DB draft picks this weekend? Seventh-round CB Mike Mickens is expected to participate, but he's not fully recovered from a knee injury that caused him to pull out of the Senior Bowl and skip the scouting combine. Maybe fifth-round safeties DeAngelo Smith and Michael Hamlin make an impressive first impression.

*Fourth-round QB Stephen McGee has a clean slate after a disappointing career at Texas A&M. His tools that the Cowboys like (arm strength, mobility) will be on display.

I think one of the UDFA guards have a chance to make it -- Isdaner or Bright.

And so it begins...

Please let this guy sit and recover if he's "not fully recovered from a knee injury". No need in him trying to prove something in May risking further injury when he'll have plenty of time in July-August.

.

Impossible. I keep hearing it takes at least 3 years before you can properly evaluate a pick ;)

Please, let it be so. If we can't find someone to back up better than Cory Procter, my stomach will still be queasy every play until I'm absolutely certain he isn't on the field.

Help me out...I thought Mickens' knee was fine now, and I kept reading that McGee lacks arm strength.

Who knows for sure. But the team has said that he's cleared to practice today. The media is the one saying he's not 100% but I've never seen any quotes from the team or Mickens to support it.

As far as McGee's arm the Cowboys and I think most scouting information has said that he can make all the throws. Though he doesn't have anything near an Aikman type qb. Sounds more like he's got a similar arm to Romo.

If this guy only had cartlidge damage why is it taking so long for him to recover?

Or 4 years if you're a first round pick and occasionally go by the name Barbie

This is true. As long as a guy is in the league and breathing is good enough for some. And after that, then they just hope everyone has forgotten about it and if not, then they'll claim you're beating a dead horse. It's an interesting and predictable cycle.

Jason Williams was more than a "workout wonder".

The guy was the best player on his team. He is a football player. He just played at Western Illinois.

You don't go from Western Illinois to the early third round if you are just a "work out wonder".

Lawrence Sidbury Jr. fell to the fourth round for a reason after his strong workouts. Everyone was passing on him.

Williams showed enough on film to get drafted in round 3.

Jason Williams was a consensus Alll-American. He was an unanimous All-Gateway Conference 1st team player. He finished 4th in all the FCS for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in the FCS.
