There are folks who believe that Tony Romo's career took a turn for the worse when Bill Parcells left Valley Ranch.

I don't recall anybody complaining about Romo while the Cowboys won 12 of their first 13 Tuna-less games en route to revising the franchise's season passing record book. However, Romo probably would benefit if he was firmly reminded of Parcells' QB commandments on a regular basis.

But Romo doesn't buy that he needs a coach to crack down on him.

"I've been coached the same since I've been here," Romo said after Wednesday morning's practice. "There's no different style or way."

So nothing changed when Wade Phillips took over for the Tuna?! Sure, buddy. Now, let's continue to the part in which Romo made sense.

"I mean, if you need to be coached to be good or great, then you're probably not going to be that good or great. You know?" Romo said. "It's all the person within. It all comes down to each individual.

"I've had coaches in the past ... one of the best lines ever was, 'If I have to stay on you 24/7, then you're probably not going to last very long.' So you need to be self-motivated. You don't get to this position if you're not.

"I think the biggest misconception is that people need to treat you like you're 17 years old. You're either going to do it or you're not. Either you want to be successful or you don't. Either you want to be great or you don't. That's the approach you take every day. That's my approach."

There's another theory that Jason Garrett and Wade Wilson, the guys who coach Romo on a regular basis, are afraid to get tough with Romo. This theory has been fueled by whispers from certain corners of the locker room.

Romo insists he has no problem with his coaches providing constructive criticism in the form of blunt assessments of his performance ... to a certain point.

"Do I seem like that hard-core of an egotistical person? No," Romo said. "Coaches coach. That's what they do. They're going to coach you when you mess up. They also understand that I do certain things that I've been able to do that are successful as well.

"So it isn't a dictatorship. When it becomes one, then you don't have the ability to get better as a group together. And the whole idea is to grow together."

Sounds like denial that he needs a rougher coach.
Seems like he's telling Wade et al. to stay the heck out of the way and let him be Romo.

Thus, another byproduct of the Clown Wade Phillips and the culture he has let take over.

This Guy just does not get it. we better get a quarterback.

I dunno, seems Tuna has been right about Romo so far.

did MJ ever need Phil Jackson to be on his back 24/7

did Tony dungy ever need to be on Peytons back 24/7?

All the turnovers tells me Tony definitely needs a Parcells kicking him in the *** constantly.

I'm beginning to tire of Tony's Parcells quotations when he wants to make a point. Parcells quit.

Tony needs a reality check of himself... "They also understand that I do certain things that I've been able to do that are successful as well..."

Like come in to minicamp bloated and talk about his commitment to greatness? Like go partying the weekend before the biggest ballgame of his life? Like tell the world that if he wins a superbowl great if not then ... "(insert smirk/shrug here)".

Tony has a world of talent but I'm really beginning to think he's letting it slip away with his lifestyle choice. I think the desire to be great is now talked about more than practiced.

I hope I'm wrong I really do and there's been nothing to say that Tony won't be a great QB- his numbers are astounding in totality, but our fanbase has a right to be more than a bit frustrated with Romo IMO.

The honeymoon is over Tony.

Maybe Wade can get Romo to do it his way if he stuffed the playbook with a box of twinkies.... :D

MJ is in a class all his own and Peyton is still a level above Romo.

What's the prize for saying the stupidest thing the fastest in this thread, anyway? Must be something good.

I believe Romo is in need of a tough coach. I liked the way PArcells handled Him. Put the anointing Oil away. He wasnt affraid to call romo out.

I dont think this self motivation approach by romo with nobody to draw a line is going to work. Romo still needs coaching, he's still raw IMO.

ROFL....are you serious with this??

Jordan's greatest quality after his overwhelming athleticism was his work ethic. So much so that it made many of his peers and own teammates hate him and plenty still hold a grudge to this day because of it (Im talkin to you, Marc Jackson!), but it didnt stop the 5 MVPs and 6 NBA championships. Michael never cared about being friends with his teammates. He treated his game like art that needed to be perfected and demanded those around him to do the same. And this is an 82 game season(not including playoffs) that spans 2/3 of the calendar year with no major off time in between. Not only was Jordan more talented than everyone he played against, he was more driven. Romo is neither.

Peyton's rep isnt too far behind.

The only way a "tough" coach helps Tony is by benching him for poor ball handling, poor practice habits, poor conditioning, etc. But Jerry won't let that happen. A "tough" coach won't do much to help Tony (at least not in Dallas).

What Tony needs is to grow up and mature a little. I think a change in attitude will help his game and his ability to be a leader and control HIS team.

Said the ever-so-mature poster who NEVER passes up a chance to take a cheap shot at Romo...

I often wonder if you even realize what a one trick pony you've become... you're an embarrassment to all of us who ever went to UTEP...

If you want to find something badly enough, you'll "find" it.

Even a "reason" to dislike Tony Romo, who said nothing wrong in this article.

This reporter asking Tony if he needs tough coaching is idiotic. What is he supposed to say? What player is going to say "yeah, if a coach doesn't stay on my tail, I'm not going to work hard."

He'd (the reporter) would have been better served going to Garrett or Wilson and asking question.

Tony's response that if you need coaching 24/7 you won't be successful is only half right. You do have some personal accountability. But you also need coaches to remind you of things and to ensure that you are being smart. Mistakes happen. However, the same bad decisions means coaching is required. When Tony stops making the same mistakes then he won't require coaching 24/7. Since that hasn't occured yet, he does indeed require and need coaching.

How can you blame Wade Phillips when Jerry Jones is the one who allows the culture to take over?

It doesn't even need to have someone crawling all over him when he makes mistakes.

The disappointing thing about this entire article is Romo's tone. It is that same type of message, like a shoulder shrug.

"Oh well, either you do it or you don't, no big deal, if not, I have had worse happen to me, I have a good life."

It is frighteningly obvious that he's content. That's one of the worst things that can happen to a professional athlete.

He most certainly needs someone to challenge him because if what he's done thus far was the result of his self-motivation, it is not quite working effectively. I cannot speak for anyone else, but Romo could be one of the greatest QBs in history only if he turns it up a notch. I wonder if he's capable of doing that himself, or if he even wants to bother.

Greater talents than him acknowledge they needed help to realize their potential. Aikman was heading south before Norv Turner began working with him. He might not need a Coach Parcells screaming at him. But he needs better than the soft hands that handle him now.

It is frighteningly obvious that he's content.
"You're either going to do it or you're not. Either you want to be successful or you don't. Either you want to be great or you don't. That's the approach you take every day. That's my approach."

Yeah, he sounds like such a slacker here.
