Early on in his 18-minute chat with the media yesterday, Tony Romo declared the that this has "definitely been our best off-season to date."

Oooh ... wait until word gets to Buffalo!!! That's some serious bait for a T.O. blow-up.

Too bad I screwed up the sensationalistic possibilities by asking him to elaborate. He was referring to changes in the playbook, not personnel.

"I just think that we threw a lot of stuff in - a lot - as far as a schematic standpoint on both sides of the ball," Romo said. "I know offensively we definitely had more stuff over the course of three or four weeks than we've ever had. We're trying to shock the guys and see if we can get it, study it, know it the next day and come out and execute it. A lot of the stuff we wanted to see if it was stuff that we could use this year. We weren't always going to be 100 percent, but we definitely found out what we like and what we don't and some of the things we could take going into camp and the season."

Romo didn't get into specifics, but it's obvious that a lot of the new wrinkles come with Martellus Bennett joining Jason Witten on the field. Jason Garrett can move Beans and Rice (Marty B's nickname for the tandem) all over the field to create mismatches out of a personnel grouping that's usually run-oriented.

Bennett's production in the passing game should help replace T.O., whose name didn't come out of Romo's mouth again, just in case folks are still tracking that.

This is the kind of news which I've been ready for. If concerns about defenses loading up the box to stuff the run are realized, this is the kind of strategy which will help beat it and lessen the necessity to throw only to Roy Williams or Patrick Crayton. With two-tight end sets, how can a defense, ganging up to stop Marion Barber or Felix Jones, easily stop an audible meant for Jason Witten or Martellus Bennett either in the flat or under/over the linebackers? That's a tall order for any defense to fill.

I like the sound of this. Maybe Garrett is finally getting it.
Yup, and with more corners/safeties that can man up, we can be more exotic on defense as well.

It sounds like more sunshine and rainbows until I see it. It wasn't like we didn't run two-tight end sets often last year. We ran them quite a bit and have for years. It is not much different than what we needed to implement when we drafted Fasano. It didn't work because Fasano didn't make the plays.

It is up to Bennett and Phillips to be better than Bennett and Tony Curtis were. It shouldn't be hard. I just don't believe we installed a bunch of new wrinkles. It just comes back to executing it better. Bennett was still very raw last year and if he steps up, I am sure people will think Garrett learned something, when perhaps it is the other way around.

Every off-season is the best ever.

Last year around this time we thought we'd see Felix everywhere, lined up with Barber in the backfield, etc. and then the games started and poof. He ends up with two receptions and games where he barely touched the ball at all, despite the results when he did.

Exactly.

Even Phillips said that was last year's plan this year. So what happened in the games where Jones did play? Next to nothing.

I take these kind of articles lightly, because it is clear we are seeing "what we like" that doesn't mean it will show up on Sundays in the fall.

Waitaminit... At this time last year, we didn't even know if Felix could play. Most people at this time last year still thought we'd screwed up by passing on Mendenhall.

Hello!!! How soon we forget. A lot of people were angry about the Felix pick and even those of us who liked it had no idea what he could do. We were pleasantly surprised at what happened when he touched the ball. I don't recall anyone predicting greatness for Felix as a rusher, pass catcher or kick returner. If anything, everyone was downplaying his potential.

Show me state.

Bennet ain't all there upstairs. Alot is riding on these guys hitting the playbook, studying and getting it. I'm not so warm and fuzzy with Bennett's committment level and 'grasping' abilities. JMO...........

If this team isn't motivated to outshine last year's squad then its time to blow it up and start fresh because nothing will motivate them to play harder.

Baring serious injury this team better be 11-5 or better and make serious playoff run.

I've been saying this from day one.

Everyone in the media is picking us to be 9-7 or 8-8 and all that garbage really dont get it.

It's not difficult to see what we're going to do next year, and the mismatches we're going to create with pre-snap movement, and the personell we have will keep the defenses guessing.

We're going to be a defensive team, with a potent offense. Yes potent. You dont need gamebreaking receivers to be potent.

I don't recall Tony or anyone saying that the offensive playbook was being expanded last off-season.

Thank you. This is the truth. Last year many at this point last yr still thought that F. Jones was a bad pick. Although we did run two-tight end sets in the past, with whitt and a more experienced ben. The offense can do more from the set.

I for one want more beans and rice!

I see where Bennett is going w/this nick: Beans Bennett is more explosive and Rice Witten is more filling. :D
