Tony Romo will play the AT&T National Pro Am this weekend and his playing partner will be John Daly.
Daly is a huge Cowboys fan and watched the Cowboys beat the Eagles in the wild-card round of the playoffs from Jerry Jones' suite at Cowboys Stadium. I'm not sure how the pairing will fare because Daly said he was "quitting" golf a couple of weeks ago.
For those interested, Romo and Daly will play the first round at Monterey Peninsula Country Club Shore Course, which is back in the rotation for the first time in a long time, on Thursday (12:01 p.m. central), Spyglass Hills on Friday (11:17 a.m.) and Pebble Beach on Saturday (10:22 a.m.). The Thursday and Friday rounds will be on The Golf Channel, while CBS has the final two rounds.
Romo is playing to a scratch handicap, meaning he gets no strokes. New England QB Tom Brady is playing to an eight.
In 2005, I somehow finagled a round on Pebble Beach with current ESPN Radio host Matt Mosley, Romo and Mat McBriar when the Cowboys spent a week in California with back-to-back games against Oakland and San Francisco. It was the players' off day (Tuesday) so they weren't breaking any rules.
If memory serves me correctly, Romo shot a 76 that day from the pro tees. McBriar was about an 84. I shot a 90 from the middle tees and Mosley's score somehow got lost in the mail but he finished fourth.
Somewhere we have photos to prove it.
