The first of a 10-part series looking at the Cowboys' position units heading into training camp.
Roster locks: Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee

Safe bets: NA.

On the bubble: NA.

Long shots: Rudy Carpenter

What's worth watching: Romo's developing relationship with new No. 1 receiver Roy Williams will be one of the major storylines of camp.

After failing to get on the same wavelength following the deal with Detroit last season, they Romo and Williams put in a lot of extra off-work together. There were some encouraging signs during OTAs and minicamp, but there was also ample evidence that their relationship is a work in progress.

Kitna is still in the getting-to-know-you process with all the receivers other than ex-Lions teammate Williams, but the Cowboys basically know what they have with their new backup. He's a savvy veteran with a significantly stronger arm than Brad Johnson.

It will be much more interesting to monitor the progress of McGee, whose arm strength and athleticism convinced the Cowboys to draft him in the fourth round despite a disappointing career at Texas A&M. McGee didn't get many reps during OTAs and minicamp, when he primarily watched and learned from the veterans and worked with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson after practices. He'll be put in competitive situations in the Alamodome.

I'd like to see him show enough to stick around as the PS QB, but that might be a bit too much. I don't think he has a prayer of beating out McGee, even if he plays better.

I want him to be thrown to the fire in the preseason games. He's an exciting prospect who I would like to see a lot of action from.

Genuine Curiousity as to why.

Do you think he has something?

Not being argumentative here, I just have not heard much good about him either pre-draft or in mini camps.

He's a player who has toughness from what I saw of him in college. He was murdered and kept coming back for more. In terms of skill, he's short, weak-armed and not all that accurate. But he is plucky. In previous years, he'd be our new hope.

if he is weak-armed then why does the article mention his arm strength as a plus?

We coulda kept brad if we liked weak armed qbs.

Where is that at? That was talking about McGee, not Carpenter.

I could have chosen my words better. He's no Brad Johnson. His arm is not weak in that sense but it is not one of his pluses. We are probably talking average. Montana was called weak-armed and he could play. It depends on the system and what he's asked to do.

His name is Boby, not Rudy, and he's a LB, not a QB. But yes, he's a long-shot. :laugh2:

Who is he, David Buehler? Only he could come back to life after being murdered :)
