The third in a 10-part series.
Roster locks: Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton, Miles Austin, Sam Hurd
Safe bets: NA
On the bubble: Isaiah Stanback, Manuel Johnson, Kevin Ogletree, Travis Wilson
Long shots: Mike Jefferson, Willie Reid, Julian Hawkins, Fourth and Long winner?
What's worth watching: All eyes will be on Roy Williams. The Cowboys are counting on Williams, a major disappointment last season after being traded from the Lions, to perform like a receiver worth first- and third-round picks and $9 million per season.
With T.O. out of the picture (if not out of mind), Williams is the clear-cut No. 1 receiver. There's a ton of competition for the rest of the WR corps.
Miles Austin, the best deep threat of the bunch, didn't get a chance to make up ground on Patrick Crayton this spring because he was sidelined by a sore hamstring. Crayton, an adequate starter for an elite offense in 2007, has acknowledged that he's motivated by the fact that folks don't mention his name much in discussions about how the Cowboys could replace T.O.'s production. But it'll be hard for him to hold off Austin if the bigger, faster, younger receiver can stay healthy and performs up to his potential.
Hurd's job is secure despite his recent health problems. The rest of the receivers are probably fighting for one roster spot.
Stanback is a dynamic athlete, but the college QB's development has been stunted by a myriad of injuries. He's coming off spring knee surgery for what could be his last chance with the Cowboys. Wilson, a four-year veteran who spent most of last season on the Cowboys' practice squad, might not be ready for the start of camp because of knee surgery. With all the injuries, Ogletree was working as the No. 3 receiver during minicamp ... until he got hurt. Johnson, a seventh-round pick out of Oklahoma, shined in the final two days of the minicamp but will probably have to prove he can contribute on special teams to earn a roster spot.
