Victor Butler's production

Wade Phillips said Victor Butler played in five snaps against Carolina. Let's see five snaps, two sacks and a forced fumble.

That's pretty good to earn more playing time, no?

"I think so, yeah," Phillips said. "It's the number of plays those guys [Anthony Spencer, DeMarcus Ware] are playing, but again, like I say, when you have 30-something passes or 40 passes a game, you really need somebody to come in and help some. He did an outstanding job."

Curtis Johnson was active for the first time but he aggravated his hamstring and did not see a defensive snap.

"Those young guys, it's just hard to tell what they're going to do in a game, you know," Phillips said. "He'd been doing better and better in practice too. The techniques we're using for him, because it's different for each player, he was really getting them down. He had good rushes against Colombo and people like that in practice, so you say, 'Well you know, he earns it in practice,' really."

More Butler and less Spencer seems as though it will be a very good thing. Wake up Spencer. A rook is about to snatch a load of PT away from you.

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any reps from CuJo. Heck, until the 4th Q, Butler was MIA on D too. If Wade is going to trust Carp, he needs to trust these young guys too, b/c both Spencer and Ware looked gassed by the 3rd.

That would actually benefit both players. Pull Spencer off the nickel packages to keep him fresh, and have a fresh Butler coming in to make QB's crap their pants on passing downs.

Victor Butler has 2 sacks, 1 FF, and 5 tackles.

G. Ellis, has 3 sacks, 1 FF, and 9 tackles.

Who is getting full time playing time of those two?

Grant Ellis, we'll never forget you.

For what it is worth dept:

Spencer did a really good job in coverage.......:)

I miss Greg Ellis. I'm not going to beat around the bush. Spencer makes me nervous. That said, Butler makes me very excited and manages to make the memory of Ellis fade. Hopefully he continues to find his way into the rotation.

Yeah, it is scary how similar that strength is to Carpenter's. They were both brought in to rush the passer though.

Stopping the run and coverage are supposed to be extras.

Anthony Spencer is a good run defender and most certainly a big upgrade in pass coverage over Greg Ellis.

But the sacks have not come yet.

They will, but platooning Spencer and Victor Butler will be good for both and make the defense better.

We may even see both on the field with Demarcus Ware at some point in our Cowboy nickel.

when a player knows that another player is behind him and might be pushing for his job, then sometimes that player picks up his playing, tries a little harder and is more serious, etc, exactly what spencer needs

Competition breeds success. May the best man win (or become two better men).

To some of you... Spencer is doing just fine. It seems like some of you want Greg Ellis back -- a "linebacker" who can't do anything but rush. Spencer is an all-around LB that can play the run and has already made two plays in coverage that Greg couldn't dream of making.

I love Butler and his great attitude, but I seriously doubt he could play the run right now. Let's just let him settle in as that third rusher before we expect too much of him.

Looks like we lucked out on Butler. Rookies don't just walk in for 5 plays and walk out with two sacks and a FF. He proved that he can at least be a situational rusher and provide good rest for Spencer.

I also saw Octavien get a really good jump on one play but the refs blew the whistle. I can't remember why they stopped the play, but Octavien had beaten the LT badly off the snap. If he can show that he will provide Ware with some rest, then we will be A-OK at OLB. That's without even talking about CuJo.

Now, all we need is to get J Williams back and let him take Carpenter's job as quickly as possible, and I think the defense will be set.

Yeah, nothing like a couple of sacks in garbage time against an 0-3 team to make you the next LT.

Cmon now!!!! It's not like he was going up against a 3rd string RT... It happened to be the same RT that held Spencer in check all game.

Please explain.

....Agree on Spencer production vrs. pass---makes one think that Wade should move him to Carp's spot in the Nickel and bring in Butler off the edge.
Spencer would also be a heck of lot more stout against the run than Carp.

Let's see him do it with some consistency. With the way people have turned on Ware, a couple of sackless games and Butler will be regarded as a Barbie Carpenter sized bust here. ;)
