How much does extra day help?

The Cowboys will have an extra day of preparation for Monday's game against Carolina, but how much does that really help?

Wade Phillips said the practice schedule gets stretched out during a longer week. The normal Friday routine is to work red zone, short yardage and goal line and today is sort of like a "Friday" with kickoff two days away.

But Phillips said today's session will have more of an "overall picture" regarding the Panthers' game plan.

"Especially when you don't play someone a lot, it helps because you're more familiar with them," Phillips said, "and what they're doing and their personnel as much as the schemes they're running.

For some Cowboys, this will be their fifth game against the Panthers in their careers, so there is some familiarity with the personnel.

Marion Barber: will he or won't he?

It's time for our daily Marion Barber update.

Barber continues to practice on a limited basis. He continues to have swelling where he strained his quad.

Wade Phillips continues to weigh whether or not it makes sense for the team's leading rusher to play.

"He wants to play,'' Phillips said. "Whether it's prudent for him to play or whether he's healthy enough, those things have to be determined. We've still got a couple of days left.

"I don't want him to be in a situation where number one, he could be hurt worse and you lose him for a longer amount of time...His game is power. If he's not as powerful, that could be a factor. It's so subjective.''

One thing that won't happen is for Barber to be active if he can only be used on a limited basis.

"You don't want to roll the dice with a player like that,'' Phillips said.

Monday Night football doesn't command the audience it once did.

But it's still special.

"I think Monday nights, usually you get the best from your team,'' Wade Phillips said. "I think the players are still excited about playing on Monday Nights. The whole league is watching and I think they want to perform well for themselves, for their team.

"There's a little bit of pride playing in front of all of your peers so I think players get excited about that.''
