DMN Blog: Wade Phillips:Jenkins & Scandrick "gifted as any corners I've been around"

I hope so. I used to get a kick out of K. Smith knocking Jerry Rice around... ohhh the good ole' days

When did that happen? All kidding aside, Kevin Smith was on his way to being elite until he tore his achilles.

Prediction: Mickens will be as much of a surprise as Scandrick will.

I think we will have 3 very good CBs (Newman, Jenkins and Scandrick) and one very solid CB (Mickens).

Unfortunately we will have one garbage PI-magnet as well (Ball).

Good job, Jerry.

It almost seems like he's learning this offseason.
The owner talking about how much players are going to play and who is going to start is not a good thing.

I'd like to think that's up to the coaches, but that's not always the case in Dallas. As is how much Dallas will run a gimmick offense due to Jones' absurd fascination with snapping the ball to a running back.

He didn't. That's why it was good.

seems like wade is just talking up guys now.

Like instilling confidence in his players and letting them know he believes in them as players? Not a bad idea

yeah, but i don't know how much it means if he calls everyone good. talk up the guys who deserve to be talked up and/or the ones who need encouragment.

In the end it means nothing until they hit the field and prove it there in the mean time building up players self confidence does no harm. He is still going to decide who is starting or coming off the bench and who makes the team or not no matter what he says today.

Or maybe he actually thinks they look good.

Nah, couldn't be.

I think Jenkins and Scandrick are good how good can they become? we will find out.

Wade Phillips: Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick 'as gifted as any corners I've been around'

There are two reasons the Cowboys didn't hesitate to ship former starting CB Anthony Henry to Detroit. Their names are Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick.

Scandrick was a fifth-round steal last season, seizing an opportunity created by Terence Newman's training camp injury and claiming the slot corner role as a rookie. Jenkins had an up-and-down rookie season, but the Cowboys are still high on the first-round pick.
Extremely high.

"They're as gifted as any corners I've been around," Wade Phillips said of Scandrick and Jenkins, "and I've been around quite a few good ones."
Phillips says Jenkins and Scandrick are both outstanding in man coverage and making strides in zone coverages while improving their technique. The competition between the second-year cornerbacks should be one of the training camp highlights, although Jerry Jones is trying to downplay the Jenkins vs. Scandrick storyline.

"I think the competition is very positive and I don't want to get into who's No. 1 and who's going to be the starter," Jerry said. "That really is not how it's going to go. It's going to take seven or eight guys back there the way we're going to play it. They're going to play a lot. Equally, I think."

1 more season and then trade newmen for a first rounder?

we'd lucky to get a 2nd and 5th for him. he's old and injury prone. in addition to that this team is awful at negotiating in trades. we'd probably end up with a 4th round pick or something of that nature, if we didn't hang ourselves out to dry and have to cut him outright.

I really like these young corners. I like to listen to Wade Phillips talk football too.

But I think Jenkins is going to blow up this season. Scandrick should be really good in the slot, and I loved the Mike Mickens pick. I even think some of the other guys are pretty decent players. Alan Ball may surprise some people, and I'm interested to see how Courteney Brown looks back at corner again.

Alan Ball seems to be following the Jacques Reeves career path. I think we'll end up with a comp pick for him when it's all said and done. Not bad at all. Spend a 7th, get a guy who can fill a spot on your team and then flip that for a draft pick when he signs elsewhere.

Of course.

And Jerry would not be the one to say who starts anyway.

Can't wait till we go zone coverage on 3rd and 11:rolleyes:

That crap drives me nuts. Happened all last year. We are ballin the first two downs and got them in a tough position..we go to a zone and the QB's have all the time to throw it and find the holes. We could have been off the field, instead they score 7.

I'm with you. With a year under the DBs belts, hopefully the staff will have confidence to leave them on the island more on 3rd downs.

Terence Newman has only played six years. You can throw out his chronological age. Dallas showed him the money. They are aware of the type of shape Newman is in and how he takes care of himself.

I'm going to laugh one day when Terence Newman is still playing at an elite level at ages 33 and 34. There are some people who are going to look foolish.

31, 32, 33, and 34 are years that will all blend together for Terence Newman if he can stay healthy.

Newman played from 2003-2006 and didn't miss a game. Terence Newman should have multiple Pro Bowls on his resume. DeAngelo "Toast" Hall has two of them alone.

In 2007, Newman missed two games due to a foot condition (probably due to the terrible turf in San Antonio) and finally was put in the Pro Bowl.

In 2008, Newman suffered an injury when a guy fell on him awkwardly in a non-contact drill during training camp. The other guy caused Newman to get hurt. He tried to play hurt and ended up needing sports hernia surgery.

It isn't like Newman is running around pulling muscles like Champ Bailey hurt his groin. If you play football long enough, I don't care who you are, you will have to battle through some injuries. It' s a rough sport.

After Terence Newman goes out and shuts down Domenick Hixon and Steve Smith (for the thrid time), this over reaction to a knee in the quad is going to look really silly.

If it was a real game week, Newman would be playing.

If the Cowboys are smart, they will sit Newman out some significant time during training camp. He doesn't need the reps, and the younger guys do.

But ages 28, 29 and 30 have shown he can't stay healthy. Chronic or fluke, they still count. If it happens repeatedly, its a trend. Regardless, it is still an issue. You can blame bad luck, horrible turf in San Antonio, it doesn't matter.

If he misses extended regular season time yet again, I would hope we consider it.
