DMN Blog: Wade Phillips will defer when 'boys win coin toss

You can't be serious. You can't guarantee you'll have the last posession in the first half - that is a 50-50 proposition.

Did you not read the entire post? At best you get an extra possession, at worst you and your opponent's possession count is even. I don't know about you, but a chance at an extra possession is much better than a chance that my opponent has an extra possession. One way or another, one team will have a chance at an extra possession, I prefer the Cowboys do.

Agreed, that is just gibberish. Whoever gets the ball first is the odds on favorite to get more possessions.

Ok, thats why Bill Belicheat said he would always defer. I wonder why a coach considered by so many to be a genius would do such a thing. Lets not even take into account that Wade said he would defer too! :bang2:

Look at it more logically. You can get back to back possessions if you kick first. Kicking first either gives you even possessions or one extra possession. Receiving first does the opposite!

For intance

First Half
  • Eagles Possesion
  • Cowboys Possession
  • Eagles Possession
  • Cowboys Possession
  • Eagles Possession
  • Cowboys Possession
Second Half
  • Cowboys Possession
  • Eagles Possession
  • Cowboys Possession
  • Eagles Possession
  • Cowboys Possession burning last 7 minutes off the clock

Thats offically six Cowboys possession vs five Eagles possessions. Why? Because the Cowboys had back to back possessions and the Eagles didn't! That also allows the Cowboys to score twice without the Eagles answering the first score. So, you have it backwards, to kickoff you could LOSE a possession!!!

How about this scenario:

1st

Eagles
Cowboys
Eagles
Cowboys
Eagles

2nd
Cowboys
Eagles
Cowboys
Eagles
Cowboys
Eagles - run out the clock

That is 6-5 in favor of the Eagles

There is no guarantee in posessions at all!

If the Cowboys only get two possession in the first half, they deserve a lot worse than that.

Well you could just add 1 more to each and you get the same result!

If the choice is to receive the ball to start the game or to receive the ball to start the second half I would take the ball in the second half more often then not. This is the only guaranteed possession you have. It makes more sense to guarantee the ball after getting to know your opponent and making any halftime adjustments. You also have the option of running off time by attempting a long drive or to attempt to strike quickly if you are behind. The fact that there are less variables and more knowns on which to base your play calling makes receiving the ball in the second half the best course of action, in most cases.

1st Half

Eagles possession
Cowboys possession
Eagles possession
Cowboys possession
Eagles possession
Cowboys possession
Eagles possession

2nd Half

Cowboys possession
Eagles possession
Cowboys possession
Eagles possession
Cowboys possession
Eagles possession

That's 7-6 in favor of the Eagles.

Just admit you were mistaken, nyc, and we'll let it go... :)
