Calvin Watkins E-mail News tips

The Cowboys have two key free agents out in the market right now.

Keith Davis, the special teams captain and Kevin Burnett, a solid nickel linebacker.

Both Davis and Burnett are getting some nibbles in free agency.

Burnett's agent hopes a deal can be done by Tuesday. Burnett has visited Oakland, Houston and San Diego. Moving back to the West Coast is one of his desires but starting is important too. Green Bay and Washington have also expressed interest.

Davis visited Kansas City last week but didn't get a offer.

Who is more valuable to the Cowboys, Keith Davis or Kevin Burnett?

You can never have enough solid special team guys and Davis is not only a leader on the field but off it as well.

Burnett is behind Keith Brooking on the depth chart at linebacker and it doesn't appear he will start here. It's probably best he move on and prove himself to another team.

Give me KD any day of the week

Calvin asked earlier whether you'd rather have Keith Davis or Kevin Burnett. Let me be clear up front that I have no issue with Burnett. It's too bad the Cowboys probably won't be able to keep him, because he can do a lot of things.

That being said, for this team right now, I'd much rather have a blue-collar tough guy like Davis. OK, maybe he's not a future Hall of Fame safety. He's not Ronnie Lott. We get that. But he is a guy who can play some defense and WANTS to play special teams. Not only that, the guy BLEEDS Cowboys blue.

Davis will be in Baltimore today for the Ed Block Courage Award dinner. This PDF is a list of all the winners this season. I'll never forget talking to KD after the Steelers game where he played through an injury. The guy could barely get his pants on without almost crying.

So give me Keith Davis. If the Cowboys had more players like him, I'm guessing the 12-year non-playoff streak wouldn't be that long.

Keith Davis is a good special teams player..You need him on ST but please do not allow him to play safety anymore..Losing Keith Davis won't kill us. The special teams last year was not good anyway.. We should keep Burnett..He has contributed more and to me should have played more..

Davis serves an important role here I hope he stays.

I really wished we could find a way to keep polk also, I love that guy. he brought a ton of energy to the crowd and to the team. He knew his role and he excelled at it.

tra battle seemed to play special teams well, But I am not so sure he isnt anything more than willie pile and so it is hard to just give him a spot.

anyway, special teams will be more important this season than they have been in 3 years.

If Dallas had a kicker that could put kickoffs through the endzone, the need for Killer wouldn't be as great. But seeing as how it's Folk's weakness and I don't see a reason to waste a roster spot w/ a kickoff specialist, Davis is 100x more important than Burnett.

well we dont know if he can or not consistently. It was bruce reads philosophy to kick high and between the hash mark and the sideline. So he was aiming his kickoffs.

Maybe decamillis will have a kick it deep and cover it scheme. Remains to be seen, but I think it is unfair to pin that on folk, he is a player, players do what coaches ask of them.

Burnett is probably the better player, but I'd rather have Keith Davis.

Burnett. He can step in and play LB if needed. Dais is pretty much one dimensional ST demon. But in the the big tuna sees it...you need to do more than 1 thing.

I would like to see both stay, and most likely will be Davis will stay before Burnett. But for LB depth it should be Burnett.

I wish we saw stuff like this written into headlines instead of "Jerry gets Botox for Glutes".

I really like Keith Davis and undoubtedly find him to be a tough guy and hard-nosed player.

If you mean can step in and play adequate LB for about 3 games before getting injured I'd agree.

Davis plays safety just not as a starter's level. He is also not just a special teams guy, he is a devastatingly good special teams guy. Good teams have those guys as the 90's Boys did with Bill Bates.

I'd take KD over Burnett with hardly a second thought if I had to make the choice.

Teams need players like Davis and Polk, I'd take them both back in a heart beat.

Keith Davis is more valuable in my book. If Kevin Burnett could stay healthy and convince his coaches to play more minutes, I would vote for him, but that hasn't been the case up to now.

Would you rather have Burnett, Davis or a fourth-round pick?

Depending on Sensabaugh's contract, we could be in jeopardy of costing ourselves a compensatory pick for Chris Canty next season, which could be a fourth-rounder.

Right now, we've signed three UFAs from other teams (Brooking, Olshansky and Sensabaugh) and lost only two (Canty and Berger). We need to lose more guys than we sign if we want to get anything for Canty next year. That means that out of Burnett, Davis, Tank Johnson, Zach Thomas, Carlos Polk and Brooks Bollinger, we need at least two of them (so far) to sign with another team for enough money to qualify for the compensatory picks equation. And for every UFA from another team that we sign from here on out, we'd need to lose an additional UFA from that list, in addition to the two we need right now (if Sensabaugh qualifies).

I'd like to have both back. I would LOVE to have both back, in fact. I think we're going to lose Burnett for sure though.

Hmm.

Keith Davis gets roasted by TEs and wore down against the run and Burnett locks TEs down and didn't miss many games as a Cowboys player.

I'll take Burnett.

Keith Davis was hurt.

And I swear Burnett has to be the most overrated player we have. Hes a 'playmaker' yet he makse no plays. If by 'lock' you mean getting roasted by Cooley, Boss, Carlson and screwing the pooch against Miller then yeah thats sure is some lockdown coverage.

It's hard to pin it all on Read. You don't think Wade or Garrett or JErry have the stones to have told Read to make the kicker kick it into the endzone?

Folk has 4 TBs out of 169 KOs. They came in 4 different games in 2007. Of those 4, 1 was after a 15yd penalty. If his aim is to NOT put it into the endzone, then mission accomplished. But either Read's a TOTAL moron and can't see that the kick coverage has been awful (it was a problem last year too) or Wade/Garrett/Jones are stupid, can't see it or don't have the guts to have done something about it when it mattered most (DURING the season)

Let's hope this changes
