Why shouldn't Romo get Bulger bucks?

Conventional wisdom is that Tony Romo won't get as sweet a contract as Marc Bulger's six-year, $65 million deal because Bulger has accomplished more in his career.

I don't get it, and I doubt Romo's agent agrees with that logic, either. You're not paying a guy for what he did in the past. You're paying for what he will do.

Who cares what happened two or three years ago? Let's look at the recent past, which is really all Romo has.

A comparison of their stats in the last 13 starts:

Bulger: 305-of-489, 3,333 yards, 16 TD, 10 INT, 62.4 comp. pct., 6.8 yards per attempt, 4-9 record

Romo: 255-of-398, 3,501 yards, 24 TD, 12 INT, 64.1 comp. pct, 8.8 yards per attempt, 9-4 record

Romo shouldn't get Bulger's deal, huh? Looks to me like he ought to get more money.

he needs to get a deal pretty soon, the longer Jerry waits the more Romo's price is going to go up... :D

As someone who posted in countless threads that we should have just done the Romo deal in the offseason, I really don't think his deal is much of an issue at this point. Romo knows what he's worth and has shown in this last round of contract talks that he's willing to go out and prove it. Jerry's shown (see TO's contract) that he wants and expects to pay key players their market rate. There's little point in signing a playmaker to a deal that doesn't represent market value. That only breeds resentment and hurts the team, ultimately.

We've extended Glenn for that reason when he outplayed his contract. We chose not to do it for Ellis because he had not. The only holdup on Romo was that the player thought he could earn top QB money and the owner wanted to be sure of that before handing it over. Clearly, Romo deserves the big contract, and you can bet that Jones is happy he does.

I'm hoping Jerry called Romo's agent Monday morning and suggested a meeting later in the week/early next week to begin serious discussions. Romo getting too many questions about contract issues and we don't want him distracted in any way. Hopefully new contract finalized by bye week or shortly thereafter.

Also agree that Romo will get Bulger numbers with maybe a roster/incentive bonus before TC opens if we win a playoff game, make it to the SB, win the SB, etc.

What is this aforementioned "conventional wisdom" he speaks of? The guys in the bathroom where he works? His wife and kids? Commanders fans? Donovan McNabb? Rex Grossman? Whose opinion is he referring to anyway?

The "true wisdom" says that Romo will get a big contract as Jerry will want to lock him for a long time. I am not in the least bit worried about his deal as it will be huge and everyone associated with the Cowboys will be very happy.

It can be argued that Romo is doing better then Bulger and should be paid more. But not a lot more. Bulger has been a very good QB on a team that has neglected its D so much that it has not been competitive. Offensively, they were quite good untill the injuries hit them. Bulger has not gotten the ink like some have but it can be argued that he is a top 5 QB.

Romo will get more guaranteed then Russell or Schaub or Bulger. As he should.
I don't think it will quite get to $30 million though.

That doesn't make sense. Russell got $29.2 million guaranteed. So you think it'll be between $29.2 and $30 million?

That's precise.

in most cases players are paid for what they have done, not what they will do unless they are a 1st rnd pick. i think romo will get in the ballpark of the bulgar deal. maybe 7 yrs 77 mil w/ 25-30 up front.
it won't really matter, he will be a cowboy for a long time. jerry has always kept his players. but he is a business man and he will get him as cheap as he can which is his job as the gm
i want romo happy but i also want him as cheap as possible. the cheaper we get him the more we have to put players around him

I suspect he will get very similar dollars to Bulger.

So do I. Bulger's done it longer, Romo has maybe more upside. I can see those two basically balancing each other...

... If Romo will take it.
