Chuck Carlton E-mail News tips

Third-round pick Jason Williams got some friendly advice from another former Western Illinois linebacker before the draft.

He had befriended former NFL Pro Bowler Bryan Cox during his time in college. The two talked during the process, with Cox offering some tips.

While Cox was known for his brashness - a trait that Williams has displayed as well -- the rookie took a different tact in his preparation.

"I treated it like a job interview," said Williams, who described his wardrobe for meeting with the Cowboys. "I got out the khakis, along with a dress shirt and tie."

The Cowboys weren't alone in their interest, especially after Williams ran a 4.49 time in the 40 at his Pro Day. Williams met with about a dozen teams prior to the draft, logging 13,000 air miles in 30 flights.

I assume he told Williams he can beat out Brookings since Cox called Brookings and Urlacher overrated and the great white hope a few years ago.

Belichick has long referred to Cox as perhaps the smartest defensive player he's ever coached.

Plus, anybody who can flip off the bird to the entire city of Buffalo is okay in my book.

They are/were overrated, especially Brooking who never really was that good to begin with.

I always thought Bill Parcells would add Cox as an assistant linebacker coach.

That makes me think we didn't reach for him at 69.

That is/was your opinion. I disagree with Urlacher being overrated and wonder how your attitude would change if he could be added to the Dallas roster?

Cox was one that could work a coaches nerve but overall he was a very smart player and one for offenses to reckon with. Gave teams fits.

I'm hopeful that by midseason, at least, that Williams will beat out Brooking.

Dallas have always had a problem stepping up and replacing a sub par player (accept for the Tune pulling the plug on Bledsoe). Hopefully the mindset have change and the best player if on the field no matter if they are rookies. With that being said if he does beat out Brookings then I hope he plays.
