The whole gang was back today, the crush of media, a large pool of agents, officials from every team in the league and all the college players. And here's what happened. ...
-- Tom Coughlin echoed the thoughts of his GM Jerry Reese, who drilled Cowboys Blog yesterday on the degree of difficulty playing in the NFC East.
"It's always been a very, very difficult not only to play in, but to win in," Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. "I remember Joe Gibbs saying a couple years ago because of the way the schedule laid, he was hopeful we didn't all kill ourselves off and have nothing left for the rest of the schedule.
"Our division has always (had) a extremely highly competitive, very physical, tough brand of football."
And that prepared the Giants to go win the Super Bowl. "The disruption of the schedule (night games, etc.) and then the quality of the teams we played week-in and week-out. As I said before, if you're going to do something difficult, you have to prepare yourself that way."
-- Here's a nice anectode from Cowboys Blog's first cousin, Hashmarks. Apparently, some former DMN staffer has taken media critic under his umbrella of responsibilities. The result is pure blog gold.
What Matt forgets to add with the "Who's Your Agent?" Guy is that the media was issued a list of the agent of every draft-eligible player. And by the end of the day, these packets were strewn all over the media room. You couldn't go 10 feet without seeing one of them.
Yet, this guy's favorite question continued to be raised.
-- We've all accepted the existence of coaching cliches. There are just certain questions that get certain answers and that's that. And in certain ways, dealing with college players is refreshing because they haven't been programmed yet by those guys.
But I've noticed one "draft prospect cliche" that has become mighty prominent. When I was in the Boston area, which has produced about a dozen NFL players, I barely ever had to ask these guys the question, "Was it your dream to play for ..." Well, now being with a Dallas publication, and covering the Cowboys, that needs to be asked a lot. There's a pat answer for it too.
"I grew up rooting up (Team X), so it would be great to play for them," the player will say. "But playing for any team in the NFL would be great."
Just once, I want here some guy come out and say, "Well, there are about 10 teams I want no part of playing for. Here they are ..." Would it be a dumb move by the player? Absolutely. But it would be entertaining.
