Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant (88) attempts to keep the spirits up on the bench during the second half of play at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Sunday, November 2, 2014. The Dallas Cowboys lost to the Arizona Cardinals 28-17. (Vernon Bryant/The Dallas Morning News) 12282014xNEWS

Special Contributor Bob Sturm answered questions in a chat Friday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Do you think we may see the Cowboys take their safeties off the field in certain packages and put more rangy players back deep like Corey White or Byron Jones?

Bob Sturm: Well, labels are just that. And with Byron Jones and Corey White players who are both capable of playing safety, it is tough to say they won’t have any safety on the field. But, the Cowboys are obviously looking for hybrid players who can do both. So, is there a chance that Barry Church and/or JJ Wilcox will vacate in certain situations for converted corners to play safety? Absolutely – especially on 3rd down and long. But, Church is still very solid and Wilcox remains promising. I am not quite the believer in Wilcox as some, but the Cowboys really like his progress. So, I think they have a good number of options back there for now.

Question: I know things don’t look good now for a long term deal with Dez but would it surprise you if they got a deal done right at the deadline? Deadlines tend to create urgency for both sides.

Bob Sturm: I fully expect that. Neither side wants this to get ugly. July 14th is deal day. I think.

Question: Any impressions of Brandon Weeden and Dustin Vaughn after the offseason programs?

Bob Sturm: John, I don’t want this to come across the wrong way, but unlike many of my colleagues, I don’t put much stock at all into shorts and helmet May football. I read the stories and watch the footage, but everything is great this time of year. Everyone looks good, everyone is in the best shape of their life, and the coaches are 100% positive about everything. I enjoy football as much as anyone, but OTAs and mini-camps are about 2 things for me. 1) a chance for all the installation and teaching that used to be done in training camp is now done here so that they can hit the ground running in California and 2) keep everyone healthy and avoid the May ACL injury. Other than that, I would much rather watch games from last year to study players. So, I have no impressions whatsoever – but I hope they both can and are completing passes in 7-on-7 drills against defenses that are wearing shorts.

July 14th sounds like a fairly reasonable assumption to me. Of course, both sides will be obliged to cooperate.

I have to say Dez is losing the negotiation battle. Showing up at OTAs twice looks like he can't stay away if he wanted to.

I don't think it makes a huge difference because DAL is pretty locked in and has no problems with using the tag this year.

Its a cliche, but It's amazing what gets done when a deadline is almost here.

In a 7v7 drill, who cares if they are in shorts and shirts? You can still evaluate the QB.

His coach asked him to show up. He did. He's a leader of this team.

Also everyone knows how bad Dez wants to be playing football. Pretending he is fine staying away from valley ranch is silly.
