IRVING -- Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith and Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli share a lot when it comes to football, including, apparently, players.
Smith and Marinelli coached together in Tampa Bay from 1996 to 2000 and in Chicago from 2009 to 2012. As a result, they run a very similar defensive system.
When a trio of Cowboys defenders -- linebacker Bruce Carter, defensive lineman Henry Melton, and cornerback Sterling Moore -- entered free agency last offseason, Tampa Bay scooped them up. While Smith said he an Marinelli didn't share notes regarding the players, he admitted that the former Cowboys' familiarity with the defensive system did play a factor in the team picking them up.
"That's a part of the process as you evaluate who you should go on," Smith said. "It helps when you do know the system and you're a step ahead. That's definitely what we've been able to get."
