I'd like to discuss the idea of mentoring in the NFL. The benefit have having one, the rewards of being one, etc. I know guys like TO had Jerry Rice to look up to and a lot of the younger receivers have turned to TO. Also, much is said about Adam Jones looking up to Deion as a mentor. Do you have someone specific that you look up to in that respect, or even someone that looks up to you that you have taken under your wing. What benefits have you noticed from these relationships?

Mentors in my book are a valuable part of life let alone football. Being a male in his middle 20's I greatly benefit from having positive influences in my life. I have a few people I look up to as mentors one of which being Victor Marx. I want you guys to check out his bio when you have a chance he is truly A SPECIAL MAN. Another being Bishop T.D. Jakes who single handedly has changed my life. I am also good friends with Mr. Sanders #21. My mom, dad, my uncle Mike, my grandfathers, great grandfather all of which played a huge role in my life. I also have a few coaches so I was very fortunate to have wise counsel in my life.
The main ingredient to being a mentor is having been through a particular situation before. Example, my mother has great football knowledge however it won't do me very much good to ask her about cover 3or how to take on a run block. She has been around the game as long as I have. However I think asking her how to take on a fullback on a iso is out of her league. Simply said you can't be a mentor without first touring the ground yourself.
If you ask me, MEN are mentors by Default. If you have kids, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, etc. you're a mentor. Whether you accept the role or not is a whole new problem. You have to know though as a older adult kids watch you do be it WRONG or RIGHT. So as I said before I'm a mentor by default. I have two sons, two sisters and a younger (hard headed) brother. I also have a few people I look after back in California.
The main thing I notice with the people I mentor is a sense of listening. Although my kids don't always understand they listen to me. My brother and I have had some knock down drag outs but he LISTENS. You know there is value in what you're saying when someone younger than you LISTENS, but also values you enough to ask your opinion. They may not always do what you say but in the end they come back to you and say "I should have listened". This is how you know you're a true mentor. When you give accurate advice or have relevance in a subject matter.
Benefits
Having someone to talk to that can not only relate to you, but can tell you how to manage or solve your problem, makes things so much easier. The married would agree staying married is hard. Being able to talk with Deion about marriage and how to maintain a happy home is priceless. Having someone who has walked through the valley is much greater than having some to walk through the valley with you. A mentor of mine who I talk to daily Kelvin Moore has helped me develop the one of greatest gifts in the world PATIENCE. Without Kelvin I don't know that my transition from NCAA to NFL would have been as smooth. He had me ready for everything that was going to happen from the time I was drafted to becoming a SP Teams standout and 3rd down Specialist.
I want to take the time to Thank my mentors publically and I say I LOVE YOU ALL.I want to also THANK the mentors, who take the time to sit down with the younger generation ( priceless). In case you're wondering Kelvin is fine and has no signs of his neck injury.
