Kevin Burnett E-mail News tips

I see a lot of conversation about this 2nd/ 3rd WR job. Let me add a little light to the conversation.

TG is still a COWBOY needs to be the first thing said. I will say with TG being out right now it is a tight race. It's really too close to call! All of the younger guys have little to no game time experience with very high upside. What I'm going to do is take a vote. If TG is not ready for game one who will be the #3 WR? The guy with the most votes, is who I will talk about in the next blog (Wed. afternoon). The guy with the next highest votes will be discussed tomorrow night. The last guy will be Thursday morning. Get your vote in early so I can get started. If you can listen to ESPN The Ticket around 12:30 - 1pm I will be in studio on air, so it should be interesting.

I guess Sam it is guys. In watching Sam play you notice a few things about his game. One of which is his ability to go up and catch the football. Sam is not afraid to lay out, jump over a guy, or come across the middle for the ball. Sam also has the most playing experience of the young guys. Another great trait is the fact that he will get his hands dirty on special teams. He is a pretty good #2 coming off the edge on KO. He makes his presence known when he is in the game be it blocking, tackling, or catching the ball. Hurd seems to know the offense and have a pretty good feel of what to do. When you get the trust of your QB you know your doing something right. Of the young group I would say Sam has the best hands and ball awareness. With his ability to go up and get the football and having played the most Sam may be the front runner for the number 3 job ( if TG does not return).

One thing I've noticed about Hurd is that he really looks bigger and stronger (which Hurd confirmed in an interview). Apparently he's a rock solid 205, and that's getting to the place where he'll be able to physically overmatch most corners. His arms look like Owens' now. This will help him fight through jams better and use that strength to get better separation. He's not the fastest guy, but he's a good athlete with good hands, and I wouldn't be surprised to see is a breakout year from him (breakout like 30-40 catches).

Hurd catches the ball which is something TR will notice for sure.
Austin has all that physical talent but cannot catch consistently.

I think Hurd and Austin could be our best bets as number 2 and number 3- simply because of their ability to stretch the field, and give Romo a very real threat that takes pressure off of T.O.

I've never been sold on Crayton- and I would have preferred Hurd to have gotten more plays than him last year.

I wish we'd kept Jerheme Urban last year.

I think I saw a picture of Hurd and he did look a little bigger to me as well.

He needed it. I've always thought he looks a little goofy and uncoordinated. Maybe growing into his frame will help that out.

Maybe he has been sleeping nights in T.O's hyperbaric chamber.

If Hurd can increase his speed like TO did early in his career he has a chance to be a very good WR IMO. I was watching either ESPN or NFL network and they were talking about training that Palamola is going through this offseason to improve his quick twitch muscles and I would think you could do the same for speed training. Speed is not necessarily the most important aspect for a WR anyway. Good cuts and routes and burst when making a cut are probably more important in creating space and I know he can improve those areas.

Hurd made this team as a 20 year old.

That in itself is pretty amazing.

He has gotten a little better every year and has shown he can make spectacular plays on occasion.

Hes a hard worker and I believe that one day he will develop into a very solid receiver for us.

I remember when TO got to Dallas there were reports that he had grown fond of Hurd and was spending time during and after practice with him. If Hurd grows in the viable 2nd or 3rd, I hope TO gets some kinda of credit. Since he is labeled as a bad teamate, a cancer and what ever other stones people like to throw.

I still believe Miles Austin will be starting opposite T.O. because of the speed and run after the catch ability he brings. Everyone mentions his drops but that's being worked on now.

I'm not sure Hurd can get consistent separation in order to justify his spot as the 3rd WR.

Color me skeptical. I hope he proves me wrong, but at this point I'm not sold.

Crayton has been consistant for us and has produced for us. The other guys not so much. Hurd and Austin won't start over Crayton no matter what you might think. Crayton has the best hands on the team. He made a mistake last year, but that is not enough to take away from his game. He always improve.

You have to catch the ball. Speed is not everything. I don't see him making the team to be honest.

None of this changes my opinion that we need to get a #1 WR next off season. I'd rather draft one due to $$$ but if we go Roy Williams or A. Boldin I won't complain.

Michael, I agree with you but I'm hoping at least one of either Hurd or Ausin can make a move. I see them both as 4-5 WRs but maybe that will change.

We have to get a 1 WR somewhere although TO should play at that level another couple of years. Which is why we need to draft that future 1WR next year. If we're going to draft TO's replacement. Otherwise....

Hurd is no bird, anymore. He does look a lot bigger up top.
He's a good WR already. I think he'd be fine as a replacement for Crayton if necessary. Privately, the team seems to think highly of him. Plus, his name rhymes with 'turd.' What's not to like?

We all want another player capable of being a legitimate #1 on a contending team in case TO and TG go down, but the reality is those players are hard to find. Not many teams have three of them on their roster at any one time.

This I agree with. We'll replace TG's roster spot next year with a talented WR capable of being a #1 for us. I'd rather get one in FA since there are good ones available via that route each year and drafting WR takes time and is so dicey. Save the high draft picks for positions we've got a better track record of predicting and, if we end up tight against the cap in the future, make up the premium we pay on a FA WR by letting a player walk at a position where we have more depth.
