My Diet

Kevin Burnett E-mail News tips

A lot of you have been asking me about my diet. What I eat varies depending on the time of year. The first few months of the off-season I eat whatever I want. As I get closer to spring workout, certain foods must go, the first item - fast food. During workouts I start to crack down on what I eat, less fatty foods and more fruits and water. Eating bad foods is really hard on my stamina. When I eat something bad I can feel it during my workout, I am unable to run very far without breathing hard. During the season, all bets are off, I eat like a body builder.

This year has been pretty different; I have been going to see a few new doctors and I have went through several different nutritional detoxification and cleanses to help get me in the highest level of shape possible. So this year I really have been eating pretty well the whole way through.

I eat 2- 4 pieces of fruit, drink 1 gallon of water and eat 3 full meals.
I also try to throw down 2-3 snacks between meals. Tell me what you think.

Here are some of the things I don't or can't eat

Cow Dairy - so I eat goat dairy
Corn or Corn products
High fructose corn syrup or corn syrup in general
Black pepper
Wheat
Soy products
Flour
Potatoes
Sugar (manufactured or cane) including, oses, dextrose, cellulose, and or fructose
Peanuts
White rice

I want to give you an assignment, go look in your refrigerator or pantry and see how many products have HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP in them. What you discover may shock you. I want a few of you to try to go 3 days without eating anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup.

I just earned a degree in dietetics (nutrition) and I'm happy to see that KB has a pretty good handle on how to eat properly. I'm sure he's been coached at some point by a nutritionist or personal trainer but I have heard some crazy stories about athletes that eat whatever they want, all the time, and still stay amazingly lean and mean.

It also sounds like he has quite a bit of food intolerances/allergies. Looks like he's lactose intolerant, possibly suffers from celiac disease, and is probably sensitive to some other things as well.

He is on point about HFCS, it's in damn near everything tasty. It's nasty too... studies have shown consumption of HFCS is a predisposing factor in childhood and adult obesity.

If nothing else, this was a cool insight into KB's life and being a nutrition fanatic myself, has made me a little bit more of a KB fan.

Can someone tell me why you can't have black pepper? I didn't realize there was an issue eating corn or tofu either. (tofu is made of soy)

Can't see any reason you'd avoid corn or black pepper, unless it gives him a real bad case of gas.

I’m confused. Does he mean he eats any and everything during the season? Because body builders live under strict diets.

In some studies soy raises estrogen in men.

Probably a bodybuilder bulking in the off season not cutting before a contest.

Burnett contributes to the dmn blog more than the team. just what i want to read about on gameday. what our 2nd string LB who is always hurt likes to eat.

Hmmm... I usually just eat loads of carbs before workouts and protein after a work out (or just a straight up protein shake), with fruits and *good* fatty foods through out the day.

But then I'm a runner, so I'm sure people trying to maintain muscle have much more elaborate diets.

When I was really working hard and playing hard I could eat anything all day long and still struggle to keep my weight up.

If I wasn't excercising I was eating or sleeping. First time in my life I got sick of eating.

Some people can't eat black pepper, i've heard of that one guy i knew it bother some kind of hernia? hiatel?

Kind of weird given how much Michael Phelps eats. I believe all of this stuff depends on the person.

Derrick Rose eats gummy bears and is in phenomenal shape. I mean look at his physique.

How many hours a day do you think he trains?

I would love to hear what TO's diet is. I know he loves Boston Market but I bet his diet is so strict that I can't even imagine. I eat meat and eggs not just chicken and or fish or just egg whites. Now that I think about it this may be directly correlated with me having to drive to the mailbox.:laugh2:
